Okay, so here's my idea. What if, in the same vein as the What Beer Are You Drinking Now thread, we had a beer comparison thread?

Idea would be to drink two (or more?) beers of identical styles in the same sitting, and write your comparisons, similarities, favorite, etc.?

I figure this has a lot of benefits. In addition to being able to see a simple score on the site and reading reviews, I think this could provide a lot of opportunities to learn, including learning about preferred hops and other ingredients, compare products across breweries, help future shopping trips, and tons more.

    Thoughts?

Awesome idea, drinking a few for science . In all seriousness though, i think its a really good idea. Plus, I always find myself thinking about whats my favorite beer of a certain style and can't really do that without tasting them side by side

    I like it.
I think it should be an open thread like "latest haul" rather than one that closes everyday like WBAYDN.

Your ploy to get me to drink twice as much might just work!

I always wondered why one was a daily thread, and one was ongoing - is it just because WBAYDN sees so much activity?

Right. There are so many good beers out there, I think it would be interesting and helpful to see someone who drank Pale ale A and Pale Ale B, and thought one was significantly better than the other, or more fruity, or dryer, or more full-bodied, etc. Then I could even compare myself and learn about my palette, who I tend to agree/disagree with, where I'm similar or different to others in terms of taste, etc. There's just a lot there, I think.

    I think so.

@HopSynonymous , I guess there is nothing else to do but start up a thread and see how it takes hold. Like a trial run.
I don't have any doubts that the folks on this site would have any problems with getting excited about it.

I like this idea. But, does it need to be a feature request? Why can't somebody just start it?

So basically an endless number of this vs. that threads where people will discuss the two beers in the thread (helpful for few) vs. dropping the beers a review (helpful for many).

Threads like this are typically removed as they end of being more like sports discussions and eventually digress into people talking about other beers, etc. And prior to removing them, they wasted a lot of moderation time.

I think we'll pass on the idea.

If you read the What Beer Are You Drinking Now daily thread you will see these sort of comparisons from time to time- either the same style, or verticals of the same beer. Feel free to post some yourself; there is ample cross-talk on that thread. Another benefit is that you can then link your post at a later time if the subject comes up in another thread.

Todd, my idea was actually for it to remain as ONE thread. (I created a similar review thread on a music messageboard once and it took off, and was really helpful). It would be called "Beer Comparison Thread" and people could just post to it as they wish and refer to it for guidance or ideas based on beers they search for. For instance they could CTRL+F "Alpha King" or search for it in the sidebar, and if the Beer Comparison Thread popped up, they could check on there to see what it was tasted against, how their opinions relate/differ etc.

I wouldn't think of it as a feature, but just a simple thread. Then, if it is used, cool! If not, it just disappears, right?

You are welcome, AFAIK, to post blind comparison tastings of two or more beers anytime you want, either individually, or with a tasting group all posting, and linking to the reviews you post after doing so. If it is a blind comparison it is pretty revealing both to you and to others, and becomes actually helpful if it results in beer reviews.

No. That hauls thread is so damn ridiculous, I'd hate to see another thread that huge. Close it weekly, maybe even monthly, but threads need caps.

The thing is...we don't want those kind of threads.

We've probibited "beer vs. beer" threads for some time because they devolve into troll fests and flame wars. None of us want to waste our time on pointless moderation, warnings and bans that can be avoided up front.

The combination of anonymous internet use, passionate opinions, alcohol and the ever present people who just want to see the world burn make this unattractive.
