I just made my 1st post and immediately someone disagreed with my opinion...which is fine. Everyone has their own taste buds and will have different drivers for the beers they like. It got me thinking about Amazon and how they recommend things based on your past recommendations. If you buy a book on beer, they scan their databsaes for folks who bought that book and something else, then say "People who bought this book, also bought xx, yy, or zz books".

I was wondering if there was a similar thing with beer likes. If I say I like Stone IPA, but don't like ...say hypothetically two bells IPA, it does not make me a bad person, just someone with a different preference. The cool thing would not be to criticize me (or anyone else) about my lack of appreciation for Two bells. Rather it would be great if someone said "Man, if you likes Stone IPA, You will Love Sculpin if you are in CA. If you are in New England, You will like High Horse Satisfaction IPA, if in Alaska, try Glacier Brewhouse IPA, etc..". Get the Idea?

Is there an App for this? If not, is it too late to commercialize or at least operationalize this concept? I rated 600+ IPAs, and selected 60 that I like. If others have a similar focus on a style (IPAs, Stout, Wheat, etc..), It seems that with the right programming and a website this could be a useful tool for the aficionado of a singular beer style.

    What do folks think?

if you can nail the recommendation aspect to the extent that it really distinguishes the factors that makes one appreciate the beer, such as Netflix had done so well, according to reed hastings over 80 percent of movies watched are chosen after being recommended, and doesn't just list beers that are from that style, like how iTunes Genius just randomly picks songs from that genre, it could be great. the question is, are there enough beers out there that someone will find themselves being recommended beers that they enjoy that they haven't heard of if it is widely available/ that they would have found anyways?

an idea worth considering might be if your site, or the site that utilizes is it, has a trading forum such as the one on BA, and the app would first display beers that the user like that are available in his or her area, and another that displays ones that are outside the user's area and lists traders that are offering those recommended beers.

Very cool idea. Can the next step be for the recommended beers to be delivered to your porch?

This feature has been requested several times over the years, and we certainly have the data and audience for it.

We do plan on exploring it...

This idea has been brought up several times in the past. I hope to have a completed product that offers this functionality within the next month or two. Of course, it seems brewgene has beat me to it... but I'm sure mine'll be better

    Edit: Okay, brewgene AND Todd

Would this be as straightforward an algorithm as looking at the deviation between rankings for any given pair of beers, assuming enough people rated them? I.e., if you did a scatter plot with one beer on each axis, and each point represented a person's rankings of the two beers, you would be looking for something that fit a relatively straight line? #nerdalert... Sorry. I guess my point is that this would probably just have to be based on bottom line line ranking, not just reviews..purely numerical.

And btw I think this is a great idea

Untappt app makes suggestions but God forbid you have a rare beer cause then they suggest you remortgage your house to afford their suggestions.
