The ignore feature pretty much work on every forums including the obsolete ''vBulletin''.

I never used it here, why? Maybe because we are discussing beer and the discussion/debate are rarely ''heated'' as were the painful threads about politics/military/wars on another forum I'm on.

I do find that most people here are well mannered. Sometimes you will read an odd/offensive post in WBAYDN but if coming from a respected old ''regular'' BA, I'll give the benefit of the doubt. We all have bad days.

What if all the users on BA already have you on ignore? Then the constant posting is all for nothing....

    ooops I gave myself away.

So, if someone disagrees with you in person - what do you do? Walk away?

Don't get me wrong, I've stopped hanging around people who I believe were not good people for how they acted on a daily basis. But, on here we are just having conversations.

FWIW, my opinions tend to be just as unpopular in person as they are here and I think that I'm just as diplomatic about them in person, but people seem to be a lot more forgiving in person than they are here. Funny, that. That said, I tend to not just volunteer my opinions in person and don't really actively try to disagree with people, because, you know, that's douche-y. Buddy of mine tried to bring up a subject that he knows that we don't see eye-to-eye on the other day and I basically said, "Dude, you know that we don't agree about that, why do you want to talk about it?" He grumbled something and we continued drinking beer and talking about stuff that wouldn't get us into a disagreement, like normal people.

I don't care if someone disagrees with me. But, sometimes, certain folks, even those you may agree with, just get on your nerves, or annoy you. I ignore them. Tune 'em out. Somebody can be sitting next to me, and I don't hear a word they say.

It's more difficult here, because you're reading a linear thread. I often don't even notice who a poster is, unless their post strikes a chord. It's difficult to ignore something that's directly in your line of sight, so the ignore button removes them from my visual space.

Add to this that in real life many of the folks who are just downright assholes on line probably act not at all like that in real life. And add to this that in real life the consequences of being a constant asshole is different than it is on line, and so more limiting of that behavior.

I don't ignore people because I disagree with them. I ignore them if they irritate me, if I perceive to be constantly trolling other people, or spamming threads with nothing of value.

Removing a few people improves your QOL dramatically. Life's to short to be constantly bothered by jerks or trolls on your favorite online forums.

You're not being censored if people decide not to subscribe to your newsletter.

Not sure if that's an analogous example. Here, you're determining that content being provided by a particular user is too offensive to look at or read so you click the ignore button and censor the content from yourself.

You are stretching the definition of "censorship" beyond recognition. Censorship is something you do to the source so no one can read it. That is what happens, for example, when the mods delete a post for various violations. Self-censorship is when a person chooses to not publish something for whatever reason.

Choosing to not read something by a particular author, even if you do that through automated means, is not censorship.

But, nice try at tagging "ignore" with a sensationalistic name, though.

Censor - verb - definition: examine officially and suppress unacceptable parts of it.

That's what you're doing when you click that ignore button. Suppressing it from yourself. It's not really all that sensationalistic, it's just what happens.

As I said, stretching the definition beyond recognition. "Officially" refers to an official, censoring so OTHERS can't read/view it.

I get it, we don't see eye-to-eye on the ignore button and its necessity or lack thereof. It's all good.

Unfortunately we don't have any real control over this, and it goes against the logic behind ignoring a user.
