I just kegged a barleywine. I don't plan on getting it into the keezer for a few more months, so I hit it with some high pressure CO2. When I disconnected the QC from the ball lock post I continued to hear a hiss. It was coming from the poppit. Not knowing what else to do I started jabbing the poppit with my thumbnail to try to get it to quit hissing. I think I'm back in good shape for storage. The poppit won't be an issue once I get the keg set up in the freezer. Open is good. For the meantime, I checked with Star San for leaks. (None noticeable). I also put a balloon on each post to see if either would fill up with CO2. Neither have, but if they do, I'm ready to tear the posts off and start tampering with poppits. I'm not sure if anyone's ever done this, but I thought I'd share my light bulb idea. Prost!
Either you have some little condoms, or you didn't quite think that through. Unless, of course, you're like me and just throw that condom over the whole keg.
My feelings are better now that you've given me an ounce of your approval. That shit is worth more than cigarettes in prison.
Getting back on topic, I do have a keg with a leaky poppit that I been meaning to fix. As long as the gas is on, it seems fine, but leaks when the gas connect gets removed. I think I have a replacement poppit somewhere. I'll keep your leak technique in mind when I get around to it.
Yea, I find that sometimes just the pin is sticking ever so slightly. Giving it a poke helps in most cases. In relation (both to the topic and the off topic conversations), I've also started using lube... keg lube on my o-rings.
If your out side poppet is leaking then you're going to have a balloon full of barleywine go all water weenie on you. Cool idea on the gas side though.
Yeah, that's pretty much the definition of a leaky poppet. It's fine when the quick disconnect is connected because in that configuration the poppet is depressed and is supposed to 'leak.'
