At its core, and as I mentioned, I'm doing it because Sam personally challenged me.

Respectfully, encouraging people to drink every day for a month is not helpful or positive.

And anyone who reads the blog entry on the DFH site will see that this absolutely is a marketing thing.

Boston training starts this next week as we'll be 16 weeks out. I'll be physically active, and trying to eat better, but don't know that I'll be drinking just SeaQuench. May hop back onto some NA beer for a while.

Welcome to BeerAdvocate, where we've been encouraging people to drink beer since 1996. And I think you'll find that most around here drink at least a one beer a day already, which is also optional with the challenge this year.
Obviously, and they're not trying to hide that. It's also a fun challenge.

This strikes me as one of the more irresponsible beer marketing efforts in recent memory. From the website:
It reminds me of all those old “stout as a health drink” advertisements - proving that nothing ever really changes.

This is more of FYI in case anybody was wondering, SeaQuench Ale has 45mg of salt per 12 oz serving which is pretty negligible. I try not to consume a lot of salt myself so I like to know how much I would be consuming from a given product.

I've never tried SeaQuench Ale, just hasn't really appealed to me based on the description, but I may have to give it a try when the warmer weather comes around.

This must be hyperbole. This is not one of the top 100 most irresponsible beer marketing efforts in recent memory.

It is certainly marketing at its core. January is a slow beer month and they are trying something creative to boost sales. I can't fault them for that at all.

They could be a little more clear about the necessity of moderation, but they are suggesting something that is squarely in the general health guidelines suggested by most professionals.

In fact, I'd venture to say that there's more evidence supporting the health benefits of drinking 1 or 2 regular strength beers per day then there is supporting Dry January as some sort of 'reset' and then returning to 3+ strong beers every day...

All the nutrition crap people shill around New Year's resolution time is way more irresponsible than this.

I'll be taking a January beer break too....but without the whole "one beer a day" thing though, lol

I think if people want to do this challenge good for them. Not sure why people get so pissed about what others do, no one is forcing you to join in. Just a fun way to change up the same old same old in a boring month, I am happy to see people tossing it up some.

FYI the beer is really tasty. In the hot summer months here in AZ it is really enjoyable. Not sure why everyone hates it so much but hey its not 15% ABV and aged in Whiskey Barrels. LOL

Me too. Do it every year to prove to myself I can do it. After about 4-5 days it’s easy, but I so look forward to February 1st.

This would be a great goal for January if you forgot the beer aspect of it and just went dry.

 Well, if I'm in the hyperbole club with what I said, then surely your comment indicates that you've been a longtime member as well.
And I guess we just have different POVs (which is fine), because I don't see this as being anything really different. SeaQuench was developed with input from a person from Gatorade to determine its electrolyte content. The Dogfish website mentions that it uses "specifically chosen potassium-rich barley strains." This beer has been positioned as a product for the health-conscious and those with an "active lifestyle" for a while. It's been a major success for Dogfish Head. It's safe to assume that they aren't timing this effort with January because it's a "slow beer month" as you say, but primarily because of people's New Year's motivations. BTW, I'm not outraged by this marketing (not that you suggested that I was), I feel like I'm just calling it what it is. When it comes to reaching out to consumers through various channels who aren't within some sort of craft beer scene, Dogfish Head appears to be masters in their field. Cheers.

They do? I'm guessing you mean on BeerAdvocate, but I never noticed much hate for this beer here. Beyond anybody on this website, SeaQuench is a huge "craft" seller as far as I know.

I was planning, for the New Year, on a lapsong souchong, hot yoga, and silken tofu diet but I'll be damned if you didn't entice me to drink sodium and alcohol.

    Just kidding.

I'll be eating hot dogs and drinking blue Gatorade the whole month, like usual.

I've been reading about Dry January recently and will give it a try. It seems like a great way to reset consumption. I'll miss my daily (usually) two beers but a health reset is a good idea at my age.

Hmmm, am in a month long dry out right now. It ends on Jan. 14. Have two weeks to decide if I want to join in for the last two weeks of Januquenchy. Sounds like fun, actually, and def. enjoy Sea Quench so I may be in as a late entrant lol

Maybe my "recent" is too far in the past, but where does this fall on the Spuds McKenzie & Swedish Bikini Team scale? Or actually more recently, the "Up for Whatever" campaign managed to go from the playful sexism of years past to at least creepy and maybe deviant.

But even health-wise on the "irresponsibility scale", SeaQuench is 140 calories and you're not getting a serious buzz off a single 4.9% ABV beer. If on the other hand you were taking an imperial stout to the dome every day you would need a lot of other dietary cut-backs just to maintain weight nevermind lose it (I know from experience!). It's not like Sam is going to say "stop drinking our beer" this month, and I don't see the harm in at least acknowledging the relative dryness of January and trying to bring DFH's own spin to it.

I've been slowing down recently. I'll be going dry for January in an attempt to get my waistline under control.

Personally, I think if you're gonna limit yourself to just one beer a day, I think you need to make it count with a World Wide Stout, or else modify the challenge to drinking a 120 Minute for 120 consecutive days
