Shameless (or possibly shameful, not sure) plug for Harpoon Rec. League - 120 calories, 3.8% ABV. Less filling, tastes great

If we're playing that game, shameless plug for Carton Boat beer.......hopped out the ass, 4.2% abv and only ~120 calories for a 16oz can. Easily my favorite "light" beer of all time.

    Even Men's Journal agrees.

Maybe next year they will promote Slightly Mighty instead:

"A lo-cal IPA that is slight in cals and carbs with mighty hop flavor! Slightly Mighty has all the flavor and tropical aromas of a world class IPA, but with only 95 calories, 3.6g carbs, 1g protein and 0g fat. Brewed with locally-grown barley, and a touch of monk fruit that delivers body and complexity but adds zero calories or carbs, Slightly Mighty is light-bodied and offers a lingering balanced sweetness."

I guess aspartame doesn't have the same ring to it as monk fruit.

Not really into the SeaQuench specific thing, but yes to a month off. I have a ticket to the SF beer week opening Gala on Feb 1st and I want to be a month free of booze going into that. That and a minimum 100 miles cycling/running per week.

I'm doing the same thing but only with bombers of huge BA stouts & barleywines. The rule is one per day, nothing that's under 1,000 calories per bottle. My beach-bod should be ready for the primetime by February.

I will be dieting, exercising more, and only drinking during KU basketball and Chiefs games (no more than 750 ml per game). I’m hoping I can keep this up through April, as I need to lose about 30 lbs.

Instead of trying to convince fickle craft beer nerds to only have 1 beer a day in January and only drink SeaQuench to get back in shape after the Holidays, Sam should come out with a mixed light beer 12 pack of Namaste, SeaQuench, Festina Peche and 4th and Gold (or pick another 5%ish lighter beer from their portfolio). Call in "DFH New Year's Resolution 12 pack" in cans and charge about $16-$17 range and it should sell very well.

The following is something that I honestly never thought I'd read on BA, let alone from one of the owners:

I get the health push and honestly wish you the best in that respect, but c'mon - don't make it so blatant that this is a DFH marketing thing. One of the best things about BeerAdvocate has always been that it's better than that.

Thanks. And I was simply clarifying one of the rules in a reply to someone. It's part of the challenge, and no one is twisting arms here.

But, the OP is the "Boss" of the site. If the DH press release had just been posted on the "News and Releases" forum, and Todd had posted a comment along the lines of "Hey y'all, this sounds like fun, I'm in, how about you?", that would have been one thing.

But, when a site sponsor, and admitted personal friend, gets it posted right up front?

Again, shrug. It's not applicable to me for multiple reasons. Y'all do wut y'all wanna do. But I still look forward to the official beer of February. Maybe it'll be available to me, and maybe I'll buy 28.

So let me get this straight. It's OK for a site owner to comment in a thread about a personal matter but not to join participants in the site in creating threads about a personal matter?

DFH Press release? Where is that? All I've seen is a blog post on a brewery web site. Can you link to the "Press Release" or explain when and how blog posts became "Press Releases?" Thanks.

Personally, If the current thread had been posted in the News and Releases forum I'd probably have been tempted to flag it for removal since it doesn't contain anything about a new beer nor is it particularly newsworthy that some guy who owns an online site reports that he's accepted a personal challenge from one of his friends.

I’m with @beertunes on this one.

It’s Todd’s site so he can do what he wants. But there were many different ways this could have been posted, that would have made it more of a tasteful plug-lite instead of a full on #ad. Personally I think the post on his personal Instagram would have sufficed. But like I said - Todd’s site so he can use it as a platform for whatever he wants.

If the head of RateBeer wrote a post about how he was only drinking some Goose Island session IPA for health reasons and that others should join him, people would be jumping all over them about the conflict of interest.

A founder of BeerAdvocate doing the same for a friend (who may also be an advertiser or festival partner?) doesn’t come across all that different — even if Todd jumped in entirely because he feels it’s a fun program with good possible outcomes, and not some favor he owes somebody.

I think BeerAdvocate has earned its reputation for independence and integrity, and I trust Todd’s word on what’s behind this, but Quenchuary still comes off really ham handed, IMO.

Honestly people on this site complain way too much. Dude just wants to announce he's doing a challenge with a friend, and promoting a healty(ish?) lifestyle change for himself. The intentions seem good here to me.

A little surprised with the backlash. Sure, there's some marketing behind it, but you don't have to partake if you don't want to. Plus it's promoting good health in a hobby that can frankly be very unhealthy if we overdo it.
