I'm still drinking big stouts mid-way thru June and have no intention of slowing down. They're not all I'm drinking but are still a big portion of my intake. They're mainly consumed indoors while I drink a lot of IPAs while outside in the heat.

Yeah, I drink a lot of beer...

Some beer taste better at "cellar" temperature; some beer tastes refreshing chilled.

One is enjoyed more in the winter in front of a fire and the other in the summer out on the patio.

Not too hard to grasp, I would've thought.

I only drink IPAs! (Pounds chest)

In all seriousness, about 80% of the beer I drink are IPAs. Sprinkle in Wild Ales, Barleywines & Stouts, most being barrel aged and hoppy pale ales and the very occasional Belgian. Doesn't matter the season.

In regard to this I do drink IPAs in the winter and Big beers ( stouts, barleywines, scotch ales) in the summer. Fall is the only time I really go after Marzens and pumpkin beers.

Year round drinker. Although I do drink the "lighter"beers during the heat of the day, and save the "heavies" for evening.

Not a seasonal drinker either. I like my stouts and IPAs year round. The only time I really crave a traditional summer beer in the summer is after a long day of yard work.

Me too! That being said, during the day, when it's hot out side in the summer, I tend to drink only summer seasonal beers, as they tend to be more refreshing, especially when served on the colder side. However, at night during the summer, I continue to love my stouts, quads, barleywines!

Very true, and I always buy a case each of Spaten Oktoberfest and Hacker-Pschorr Oktoberfest. Those beers must be part of my genetic memory, I love them.

If the formulation has relevance year-round - then sure! But would you really want to drink "pumpkin ale" in March? Answer: if you are drinking it for the formulation, then perhaps yes. But if you are drinking it for seasonal sentiment, then certainly not.

Kind of reveals what the real driving force behind some of these seasonals are - its sometimes driven by sentiment, and not the formulation itself.

i agree with a lot of what has been said here. I'll drink any beer at any time of year (as in regardless of weather), but for me it's more about setting. If I'm sweating my ass off after a bike ride in 90+ degree heat I won't order a stout, but if its a warm summer evening and I'm relaxing on a patio then sure. That may be because the climate here is very hot in the summer. In the winter, temperature doesn't generally affect my tastes.

I can see certain beers being more refreshing on a hot day or something like that but I'll drink any beer any time of the year. If the beer is good, the beer is good.

Totally on board with you OP. I also eat hot soup in the summer without a second thought.

I do like the seasonality somewhat. Having a pumpkin beer in the fall just enhances the feeling of it being fall, and the same goes with summer beers. And when a big snowstorm is coming, I certainly like the idea of a big stout.

But I think those are more psychological ideas that I like to connect with, and not so much a physical thing (i.e., drinking a big stout to keep warm or a lighter saison in warmer weather).

Both. But mainly seasonal. Basically in the summer when I'm manning the smoker, fishing, lying round the pool ( I always say I do this but it never happens.) Cutting the grass, etc I want the lighter refreshment of a Lager, single ipa and so on. And the cans makes a difference big-time. I really don't feel like drinking or throwing a bomber in a cooler or break out 2 tulips and a stout while I'm canoeing or fishing.

I like to be a seasonal drinker for the reason of being able to change it up and it makes me look forward to different times of year. I'm not super strict on it (I drank a bomber of 2015 Parabola back in mid May) but I like to do it makes me think back to history and why certain beers were brewed and consumed at certain times of year way back when. The history geek in me loves thinking about this and pretending to identify with it and possibly enjoying it a bit more.

I agree with drink what you like when you wish to.
I let the time of day and current mood dictate what i drink. But i do think summer is when i stray away from the dark side a little ( not fully depart) but i am less likely to drink something above 7% and if i do its after the sun goes down. Alternatively when its -20 and snowing im still happy to reach for a gose or a helles or and RIS the gates fly open.

I am generally a seasonal drinker. The Utah summers are 100-105 degrees! I don't crave a warm stout in that weather. However, if a building is adequately air conditioned, I may drink an imperial stout or barley wine in the summer if in the mood. I generally stick to 3-5% abv cold pale ales/lagers/kolsch/helles/hefes in the summer. Thirst quenching!

I drink whatever I'm in the mood for.

So I guess I'm more of a ''whenever, whatever'' drinker.

A big porter/stout is strangely refreshing in the hot months, but Seasonals are fun for their freshness, and limited availability.
