Point taken. It's an interesting argument and I definitely see both sides.

Point taken. It's an interesting argument and I can see both sides. I can't speak for Germany since I don't live there. If the beer laws change, it would be sad like the day when they put the lights up at Wrigley Field. Such a tradition. Then again, I don't live in Chicago either.

(Sorry for the double post, I was "timed out" after 15 minutes - gotta love it.)

Just as an FYI, the RHG has not had the force of law in Germany for several years now. Because of an EU court ruling (having to do with commerce, etc.), its status these days is much more akin to a truth in advertising law. The only time a brewer can be "punished" for not following the RHG is if they claim they are following the RHG guidelines but then don't.

Much of what keeps the beers brewed under the RHG guidelines alive these days is that large numbers of German beer drinkers simply refuse to consider any thing not brewed following RHG guidelines as being real beer and worthy of consumption. While that may be changing, the real constraint on what gets brewed is not the RHG itself but rather popular taste and what folks are willing buy to drink.

No I didn't, I'm sure there's a good chance they'll still be there forever. They're on the bottom shelf at the back of the store where I bet no one ever looks. Maybe grab one for this weekend. Highly recommended?

I can't recommend this particular brand since I have never had it. I was hoping that you would provide me input here.

    Cheers!

Haven't had a full bottle to do a review on here, but based on the taster sample I've had I'd give get a bottle if I saw it that fresh. (Love to hear what you think on NBS.)

For what it's worth, prompted by this thread I hunted down some Vitus and found some .5l bottles from September of last year -- they're holding up quite well. Wish I'd bought a few, don't hesitate with German beers 6 months old or less.

FWIW, I see that lagunitas just released a "bavarian styled doppel weizen" at 9% abv.

Weisen Bock is essentially imperial Hefe Weisen, right?

Another 'Murican bastardized category. The same people that want to "imperialize" and make every classic beer style taste like a sour patch kid or breakfast platter are probably the same ones that bitch that bombers are too big.

Well, since you don't understand English and grammar with a hint of sophistication and cynicism, I'll dumb it down a little.
Everyone is so excited for high alcohol beer that tastes like sour candy, maple pancakes, fruit salad or the secret Starbucks menu, or are willing to carelessly slap the "imperial" term in big letters on a new bastardized and stylized "beer" for $23/4 pack. But then, these same people, scoff at the classic beer styles and traditions and endlessly bitch that the same beer they paid $23/4 pack is $17 in a bomber. The "imperial" term has become an invasive virus.

The purity law might limit creation and experimentation. But if you discard the purity law, German beers that are commonly imported into the US still undergo bottle conditioning and mashing schedules that make corporate American bean counters cringe.

The reality is there is more to adding adjunct and getting creative. You've got to work with proteins and Wheat requires a more conscious effort to avoid stuck sparge.

Why is anyone defending Reinheitsgebot?!? An ancient passe law that legally limits creativity and crushes innovation is nothing worth defending.

Wow, you're a fucking asshole. Simply because I don't understand why your comment about bottle size and americanized styling has a place in a conversation about a centuries old German style doesn't give you the right to be a self righteous prick.
Edit, I think your sophistcation and wit would be better shared with the wine community.
