You don't get Atomic Torpedo in your neck of the village so you don't know.
To answer your question, i prefer BA Darkness to Reggie but enjoy both immensely

A lot of people here don't.

    I have proven many wrong.

@BigIronH and @Beer_Economicus have been witness to me and wifes 8 mile round trip walks.
3 miles is a regular thing.

Most people here do plastic surgery. I take the old school approach

I'm an Imperial Stout nut, if I see one I buy it. IMHO American Imperials improve if they get barrel aged, but I don't see any improvement in Russian Imperials when they're aged. Just my $.02, but with today's prices, maybe $.05!

Interesting distinction; I find that there are ones of each style that improved with BA, and some of each that don’t. By and large though, it is rare that a skilled Brewer or person responsible for aging beer in which barrels actually release something not as good as the original. Still, no accounting for some peoples taste!
    Cheers all!

It’s hard to please everyone. BA stouts don’t have a range of styles like IPAs. They just have one category: Stout aged in a barrel. (I’m politely ignoring pastry stouts that are BA…) So, some people really like a BA stout to be in your face with the BA, while others want it to be more balanced. You can’t please everyone.

For me, I am the former. I want it in your face. I want a Whiskey wallop to the face. When it is “balanced,” what that always means is that…it basically tastes like a non-BA stout. If I wanted that, I’d have a regular version. Instead, I want that whiskey flavor. I want to taste it and know it is there without ever having to search for it. I want it all!

    :sunglasses:
While that's true, I find there to be considerable variation within the style. From tequila to Scotch, from rum to bourbon, there's considerable difference in the flavor profile depending on the types of barrel/barrels used. Also... I'm pretty sure you know this, but ba stouts aren't just a matter of the brewer dumping the base beer stout into a barrel. It takes careful blending of different "stouts" into the barrel in order to come up with something palatable, let alone extraordinary. As a result, I personally find there to be considerable variation in the flavor profile, depending on the brewer, barrels used or the particular base beer blend. IMHO, this is a far greater difference than just the one you're describing (ba stouts that are in your face and/or those that are more "balanced.").

That being said, generally speaking, I do prefer ba impy stouts that are in your face. :sunglasses:

It’s been a monster day underground, and you said that far more eloquently than I could have. For sure, everything you mentioned is absolutely on point. My only point was that it seems like when people like a BA stout, they either like that it is balanced (and so the barrel doesn’t hit you square in the mouth), or that the whiskey can be quite over powering (think BCBS). There are for sure other aspects to consider, but I feel like it is this fence that I feel people fall on more often than not when they dislike a BA stout.

True, producing a BA stout requires significantly more skill than producing a non-BA version.

    And here it is.
    2019 Darkness courtesy of @BigIronH
I was tryin to sleep but took a 3 hour nap earlier and felt the Darkness calling me.

Poured out dark brown and settles like a dark night. A 1 and half inch head forms and settles into 1/4 inch light brown that does not go away.

Smell is a barrage of dark malt , dark chocolate, dark fruits and coffee. Exactly what is expected.

Taste is whats expected. Follows the nose like Tucan. Perfect blend of chocolate, coffee, caramel , fudge...pure glory in this one.

The mouthfeel is excellent. On the thick side and coats everything leaving flavor to resonate on the palate

Overall impressions of this : buy it and enjoy it. Its glorious.

I give this baby 4.84 out 5 on BA ( old score will remain)

BigIronH is a real one and has sent me plenty a BA and Base Darkness of many vintages. This one i think is the best so far of the base vintages

Pretty sure the last 4x of BA narwhal I grabbed was $9.99 . And it's sitting on shelves here. Compared to beers like dragons milk, well BA narwhal is about the best bang for the buck as far as BA stouts go.

BA Ten Fiddy and Willetized are pretty well priced. Ten Fiddy might be the most expensive out of all of them, but imo is the best

The way they're dragging out this years release of Willettized they leaving an oxidized taste in my mouth. They've deleted all my comments as well on instagram when i question how they can release all these new hard teas but blame a covid variant on the delayed release of Willettized. It makes no sense . TONS of breweries have released Barrel Aged stouts this year , i just think they're full of shit and would rather focus on hard teas and syrup ipas

They could raise the price by $5 and still sell them all. I think the 4-packs were priced at $15.99 near me or somewhere in that neighborhood. I drop $25 on KBS without thinking

    KBS is 16 dollars now

Willettized was always 12 dollars for the 4 pack . This year im buying a case of them probably more.

Wow, I've never seen KBS below $23.99 here. I buy a lot of it, so $16 would be awesome
