...Craig, there are still bottles of Mephostopheles to be had...Avery's President and CEO, Adam Avery, in 2019, called the the beer a 'dessert stout'...I think I may grab another bottle or two the next time I stop in...

Absolutely, having head retention on a beer that high in abv is always a good sign

2016 was written on the label. Had no reason to doubt it.

This is identified as an imperial stout, both here and by the brewery, but in this OG’s beer nerd dictionary, it’s skirting the edges of that definition at 8.5% ABV, IMHO.

But it’s not skirting the edges of being a very good beer, again IMHO. This is nearly two years old (canned 10/12/21), and still drinking REALLY well. The peppers are more forward, which works for this old beer nerd’s palate.

Pleasantly surprised at how much I liked this one – 4.35 overall. The coconut is probably the most prevalent flavor, but there is a strong tropical fruit current with the mango. I am used to a chewy and syrupy feel from coconut forward stouts, so I’m not disappointed by that. My only complaint is that the bourbon barrel is not as strong, and I wonder if that is because this was a 2022 release. I think that these guys and Cycke make the best adjunct forward barrel aged stouts, so that’s why I took a chance on a fruit flavored barrel, aged stout. Thankfully, I was not disappointed.

Modern Morning, more maple syrup than imperial coffee stout in taste, so not one I would recommend unless you’re into the sweet stuff. But it was new to me so I needed to try it.
    Cheers!

    This delight, still sharp
    Coffee, toffee, bourbon notes
And still thin in body, well carbonated
    Cheers

Here's a fantastic stout from Jackie O's. Chemesthesis Blend of imperial stouts aged for 19 months in bourbon barrels and conditioned on Ancho, Cascabel, Mulato, and Pasilla de Oaxaca chiles, cacao nibs, hickory nuts, cinnamon, and vanilla beans. Cheers!

The pour. I was amazed how different the head was, and I poured them the same way.
The more recent one was definitely more true to the intent of the brewer, which surprised me just a little. Both were great, but that chocolate flavor that they create from the malt was more apparent in the 23 than the 20.
So lesson learned for me: drink fresh for more chocolate, age for less.
This has been a Public Service Announcement.
Or I’m just a little under the influence.

So, Ive been away from the impy stouts for a bit, but wanted to get back in here with an entrant that was sent to my by our champion @Resistance88 ! Thank you for this tasty brew and the opportunity to consume it!
This is El Segundo Brewing and their Barrel aged Standard Crude Imperial Stout. clocks in at 11.3%!

    onto my review:

I am sampling a 2020 vintage pouring at cellar temp into my snifter. The beer pours pitch black as it enters my glass and a dense creamy beige head of about 0.5 cm. this foam fades to a sturdy edge layer and some streaming streaks across the surface of the beer.
There is a big bourbon note in the air soon after the pour, without even really sniffing the glass bourbon is prevalent.
I also get rich chocolate fudge, hints of anise, and a bit of charred wood. Bourbon carries throughout. Never any hops on the nose and not fusol or hot either.
First sip reveals a medium body and very fine gentle soft carbonation. The physical traits are easy drinking on this one.
Flavor is similar to the nose. I get some sweet bourbon notes and then fudge chocolate which rolls to hints of char and again some anise, then bourbon comes back around again. A bit sweetness lingers, maybe brown sugar here. Again, never any hops and the ABV is totally hidden.
Quite a nice BBA Imp Stout that doesnt feature tons of adjuncts and drinks dangerously easy. Glad to have tried this one!
    4.36 in the BA DB

i know i sent you this, but your review makes me regret not keeping it :joy:

So glad you enjoyed this my good friend!

Sadly they've done away with bottling these and switched to 16oz cans ,which ,IMHO(meaningless) ,is a MASSIVE disservice to this beer.
Drank my body weight in vintages from 2015 to 2020 so not too bummed, but i am angry at them for it. *yells at sun*
