So I'm working my way thru the Extreme Beer Box / Big Stouts and just finished the FW Paraboloid when I saw your post. Couldn't resist following up with a Willetized (for purely scientific reasons, of course). I found that I prefer Willetized by a slim but significant margin. So now I know.
Although I really don't like much of what Lagunitas offers, Willetized is one of my all-time favorite Imperial Stouts.

Bourbon barrel-aged 3 Bean Stout from Lervig in Norway. This is a stout with cocoa, vanilla, and tonka beans.

2020 can poured at fridge temp. Pours motor oil black with a solid inch of light brown head. The nose is amazing. Tonka beans, chocolate, vanilla, toffee, salted licorice, milk, and some dark fruit. Not getting much of the bourbon barrel on the nose. Let's see about the taste.

The taste is wonderful. Here I definitely get the bourbon. Vanilla, salted caramel, booze, chocolate, black licorice, molasses, brown sugar, some roasted malts, dark-roasted coffee beans, and some oak. Lovely and beautifully integrated.

Mouthfeel is thick and creamy. Aftertaste is licorice and charred wood, with a kiss of burnt toffee. A wonderful stout!

Here's an amazing stout. No barrel-aging and nothing added. Eat the Rich from Adroit Theory in Virginia. Part of the Extreme Stout Box. Comes in at 12% ABV.

Poured at fridge temp. Pours midnight black with a slim layer of light brown head. The nose is full of roasted malts, some vanilla, sesame, dark fruit, and molasses.

The taste is intense imperial stout! Lovely! Huge roasted malts, coffee grounds, tobacco, charred oak, vanilla, and some black licorice. Just a straight up RIS without anything added. Lovely!

Mouthfeel is thick and robust. Aftertaste is dominated by roasted malts. This is how stouts should be.

Imprint Brewing - Maple Vanilla Coffee Imperial Stout. Pours inky black, thin tan head. Aroma definitely hits all those notes, and is very pleasant. The taste actually has a dry earthy maple finish, not sweet at all. full bodied, silky mouthfeel.

Everyone’s drinking that Adroit Theory beer huh? I have family in Virginia and we took a trip out there in 2018. Had never heard of them, but their beer was definitely good compared to most other places at the time in the area. Definitely a unique spot (not sure if they’re in the same location anymore). So cool to see they’ve kind of blown up in years since I went.

I'm with ya. I really don't go for anything from Lagunitas other than Willetized. I will definitely be grabbing another 4-pack this week.

Another beer from the BIG Stouts box. This is Barclay Brewing FLUX a 13.8% imperial stout with added vanilla bean. Never had the brewery before and excited to give em a run.

    onto my review:[IMG]

Sampling this cellar temp beer. Pouring the 12 oz can into my snifter. Date stamp is 1/03/2023. So very fresh beer.
the beer pours a very dark black color, fairly thick on the pour, and even with a VERY aggressive pour, I only get.5 cm of dense dark brown head foaming up on the glass. This foam fades quickly to a thin edge layering.
Aroma on this beer is fudge brownie, some light vanilla and a bit of sweet bourbon. no hint of hops and the bourbon notes are sweeter not boozy or fusol.
First sip reveals a thick body with coating texture and gentle rolling carbonation. Definitely leaves a coating on my palate after each sip.
Flavor is dark chocolate and fudge, moves to some sweet vanilla. Also some bourbon notes mixed in here. NOt boozy on the flavor profile either. No hops anywhere.
This is a big thick beer with the flavors that are anticipated based on the label. I enjoy this one and am glad to have tried it as part of the BIG STOUTS box. gave me the flavors I expected when I popped the top.

It's also somewhat amusing that.their suggested pairings for this beer are all things that indicate a certain class status, and it.sure isn't "poor".

Well this is something I didn’t know, and will look into. It is one thing to be edgy, making people uncomfortable, and an entirely different thing to praise violence.

Personally, I saw that label as bing along the lines of Jonathan Swift’s “A Modest Proposal”. H.G. Wells made a similar comment in The Time Machine with the Eloi and the Morlocks. While I detest censorship, I do support common decency.

Today is Monday, not Sunday. The reason for the delay, and why I intended but bailed on rating Dark Mode for New Beer Sunday, is it turns out I already had this beer several times counting the special XO barrels back in 2018-2019.

The confusion on my end is somewhat justified, as this was originally sold (draft only) as Barrel-Aged Lynott's Stout. I don't believe this was brewed in 2019 or 2020, and was re-introduced in December 2021 under the current "Dark Mode" name. It's also part of BA's latest online stout package. So, how has it held up?

Full review in the Cellar Review thread.

    Summary treatment here:
    • Beyond mild cardboard emanating from the aroma, the beer is consistent today with my review of the draft version.
    • Unknown variable is my OG review was draft, I did not rate cans purchased 14 months ago fresh, so close comparison but not exact.
    • This beer is very good, though I would have lowered aroma by 0.5, taste and overall by 0.25, if this was my first exposure to the beer. This is consistent with many of my cellar reviews (slight drop-off overall).
    • Bottom line, follow Rev's advice and drink now or store cold.
