Five years ago a bomber of Fat Tire would've fit the criteria.

I'm not the arbiter, it's not my event, I'm just a regular attendee.

Just trying to be contrary are we? It's actually a pretty simple and common requirement (in practice, more of a suggestion) for these type of gatherings. The point is to not to exclude but to encourage sharing beers people don't have regular access to. It defeats the whole purpose if someone brings Fat Tire when it's probably on tap at the bar or across the street.

Thank you. I was stating the requirements so that people who want to attend know what to bring.

Not necessarily. Some bottle shares might be more open to common shelf beers, some might be "whales" only.

You are over complicating things...it is real simple (as someone that does a few shares a year with different groups). He said out of state OR cellared OR rare, not that it had to be a rare beer from out of state that was cellared.

This thread is thick with the typical douchebaggery and elitism that has poisoned the craft beer community. I'll show up with a 40 oz of Steel Reserve and knock over your precious Cantillon :stuck_out_tongue:

    How about this:
    "Bottle share. Bring something nice."

On second look I see you did in fact mean or with the /'s, but I still believe you are over complicating it. Either that or we (the groups I share with) are much nicer/chill than the craft beer people you know.

edit: I will say that in our groups there aren't rules because it isn't necessary. Everyone knows it isn't about drinking things you can buy straight from the shelf. Which means it has to be out-of-state/rare/cellared.

So it isn't sharing for the sake of sharing then?

Just make sure that Steel Reserve has been cellared for a year or two first.

    1) Was that whole discussion about the criteria of what is appropriate to bring, for real? What sacrelicio said was pretty clear and hopefully anybody on BA checking out threads about bottle shares already gets it. If somebody comes to a bottle share and brings a low caliber beer as a newbie, hopefully nobody is kicking the person out of the loop. They will know once they see what others have brought, that they need to up their game the next time around. Every group tends to determine what level of beers they are comfortable with and what is considered "whales" tends to change from group to group.

    2) I think that a lot of people skipped over the very first word of the subject of this thread, which is "impromptu." I get that some groups may gather for bottle shares on some sort of regular schedule or arrangement and that is probably even appropriate for the corkage fee that some have mentioned. But that is not what I am talking about. Here would be an example; at Happy Gnome, they have a beer release for Double Crooked Tree. Now in CA, if there was a night like this, I might throw a bottle of something interesting in the back of my car and if I saw a couple of friends inside or even just became friendly with some new people, I might say "hey, I have a bottle of Beer XYZ in my car" and bring it in and have the bartender open it and pour it equally across a handfull of glasses for the bartender(s), my friends, myself and maybe even leave a couple of extra pours for the bartender to hand out at his/her discretion. Nothing requiring a corkage fee and nothing prearranged.

So basically, are there beer bars around that draw a bit more hardcore beer geek customer base, where this would be common to happen, where if I have a bottle of fresh Mongo in my car, I can go grab it, bring it in and share it and then (although there is no obligation for reciprocation) usually somebody else may have already brought in a bottle of something else that they have waiting in the cooler, or their car, etc.? Nothing formally set up and nothing requiring a corkage fee, as the focus is not to replace drinks being bought from the bar.

Does this even happen out here?

F-that. It needs to have spent the past four years in a beverage cooler that was unplugged, in a greenhouse, in Lake Havasu City, AZ (hottest city in the U.S. with a population greater than 50k).

I wondered this same question after moving here from ATL, where this kind of thing went on at the Brickstore most Thursdays and Fridays. I think some of the responses on the thread indicate how foreign this concept is in MN.

For the sensitive guys whose feelings are hurt by such "elitism and douchebaggery", how does one feel so slighted about something they have no interest in anyway? Clearly the point of this kind of event isn't sinking in. It's not the same as BYOB. Part of the rationale for the bar letting people drink these bottles is that they are not competing with the bar. People get a small amount of something they wouldn't drink at the bar anyway and they still purchase food/drinks and tip the bartenders accordingly. Good luck getting together your bottle share without any expectations. I'm sure the bartender is going to be cool with you cracking your Grainbelt or Steel Reserve in their bar. I sympathize with those of you turned off by the constant Cantillon/rare/whale obsession on this site. But for the record, I've never once seen someone criticized for what they brought to a bottle share at a bar.
