It seems that living down here in the Sunshine State leaves many of us Floridians without much leverage to trade for some of the good Midwest/West Coast stuff you guys take advantage of. Is there any particular beers (Aside from CC's Hunahpu and Zhukov) that command some trade leverage for you guys? Is there anything from out here that you would like to try?
Folks all over seem to like getting Wake-n-Bake. Not sure how widespread Terrapin distro is in FL and whether or not you'll find any from the last release, though.
I've found pretty much any CCB limited release and even some off the shelf CCB stuff is pretty desirable to non-Floridians. You're not going to land a whale with Big Sound or Humidor IPA, but you can definitely trade things like those $4$ for equal (maybe even higher) quality beers we don't get down here like seasonal/rotating/shelf FFF, Surly, Founders, etc. People also seem to really like Ballast Point Victory at Sea, I've traded that a couple times as part of trades. I know BP is a cali brewery but we got plenty of V@S this year where I live in FL. Also, you mentioned MZ, but I'll reiterate that this is a great beer to trade if you are from an area of FL that has lots of it. I've used it as the center piece many times in trades to land some big time beers. In fact, it was really my only initial trade ammo, and I was thrilled with that I could land for it. Its a great beer that people want, and is only available in a small geographic distribution area (see other thread called "Trade Value of Zhukov" if you want details). So stock up on it when it comes out, and send a bottle or two my way since I'm moving out of FL!
These all sound great. I wish we could get BP, I think they must be confined to Central/Northern FL. Must be separate distributing networks or something. What about Saint Somewhere? Any luck landing some good trades using them?
That's unfortunate you can't get BP, I'm in Tampa and we get plenty. Sculpin is almost always.on the shelves, which is nice. No clue about St. Somewhere. Ive never had anyone ask for it, although in all fairness I've never listed it as something I've had access to, so I'm not really sure.
St Somewhere is on shelves in Chicago and Philadelphia, even though I never saw it when I lived in North Central Florida.
Yeah, closest distro of BP for you is Ft. Myers or Stuart. PB, Broward, Miami Dade(and the Keys) get none.
Saint Somewhere probably won't land you much. We get Saint Somewhere all the way over here in Portland. According to seekabrew.com, they have a surprisingly wide distro range.
I know I am always looking for 7venth Sun, Funky Buddha (when they start to do bottles or growlers again), and of course all the different variations of CCB as well!!
I am not impressed with St Somewhere, I buddy of mine was going to volunteer at the brewery this past fall. I went with him, we helped bottle for about 3 hrs. Not a big operation. I only saw 3 people the whole time I was there. We maybe did 10 cases for him. Had a few tastes. and he gave us each 3 bottles. Was not impressed, one bottle was nothing but FUNK. I thought I was going to throw up. We tried the other style and it was just not good.
Wow, to think that Sculpin and Victory at Sea is about 100 miles away from me. That's a damned shame... sigh.
I'll agree with other posters, off the shelf and other limited release CCB stuff is your best bet. I've done trades for FFF Zombie Dust by simply offering mixed sixers of CCB stuff that I can get year round from the Publix down the road. I recently got two 4-packs of Heady Topper for 2 bottles of CCB Sea Bass, which I can still get off the shelf at a couple places as well. It is a shame that distro in Miami is very lackluster compared to what we see here in the Tampa area.
I am not sure how good CCB distro is, but in the past I have enjoyed some of the regulars offerings like Cubano-Style Espresso, Jose Marti Porter, Guava Grove & Jai-Lai variations. Your not going to get whales with them, but they should trade for quality locals.
