I haven't done an in person trade yet but I have one that I am trying to arrange. Do you still normally include an extra? Just don't want to have poor etiquette and not show up with one or being the only person with one. I would be interested to see what most people think just because my instict would be not to do it since most likely you have access to the same beers. Plus, imagine showing up with a local IPA and the other person has a coveted stout. It would just be awkward to say the least haha.

I've done a couple of IP trades where we both lived in the same area. One of them we agreed to include extras, and the other one we didn't talk about extras, and neither one of us provided them. We actually found out we live less than 1 minute away from each other.

For the one where we did include extras, I just threw in some stuff that I had previously traded for. I think they were some HT, and Zombie Dust..

It will be fine, just communicate either way!

    Cheers!

I have done a few in person trades. All with local BAs. The first time I "extra-ed" a pint for the gentleman I traded with. Each subsequent time I "extra-ed" some extras I received in recent trades (typically a couple 12oz bottles). I always believe that giving is more fulfilling than receiving.

I have thrown in extras for some local in-person trades, but not for all of them. Usually if it's a 1:1 bottle trade, I'll skip it; bigger trades, I'll throw in something the other guy isn't likely to have.

I now always just say up front whether I'm going to include extras. It obviates any awkwardness.

i usually ask for no extras during in person trades since it usually happens at a release or event where there's already too much beer.

Don't sweat it.You guys haven't talked extras so technically I'd say neither has to give any.Even if you brought an ipa and the other person brought a stout as an extra, who cares? Its the thought that counts.Just try to give the other something that they might have if you do consider a extra.
Personally,I always try to give extras IP or not.

    Cheers

Yep - generally the same guidelines apply to IP. I feel like I'm always sitting on something from out of market that makes a nice extra, either from travels or trades.

Even if not though, I think this is one scenario where most people are ok with re-gifting extras from another trade, as it is done less to get rid of the beer and more to share something out of market with another local.

I typically don't include extras during in person trades and I try to communicate as such. Though the couple times I've been caught red-handed, I bought the other trader a beer.

if you care about the following situations,

    1) you show up with extras, your partner doesn't have extras. (either you think they'll be embarrassed and want to avoid it, or you're like I'm Not Giving Away Free Beer If I Get Nothing In Return!)

    2) you show up without extras, your partner gives extras,

then bring it up to your trading partner now. if you have more of a casual, "either there's extras or not--they're extras," attitude, leave it up to fate, and get extras if you feel like it.

myself, i'd bring it up because i'm extremely neurotic. it's not a big deal either way though.

I usually suggest skipping extras. The last time someone brought an extra against my wishes, I punched him in the face. He'll know better next time.

Haha. Thanks for all the tips. I'm not stressed out about it just seeing if there is a a generally accepted practice. I will just ask since I don't care one way or another. I rarely trade so I normally don't have extra extras lying around but I know some heavy traders and could work something out with them.

There is nothing wrong with that. Especially with an IP trade where you probably have access to most of the same shelf stock.

I did an IP trade today and we agreed to no extras.

I did an in person today and had this exact question, but figured no extras, WRONG, he brought an awesome extra. Luckily I doubt this will be our last trade so I'll get him next time.

I'd say extras are much more fun when opening a box... its just like christmas!!!

When I did IP I brought just one extra and played it by ear. IPs are pretty awkward I guess, and I think there's less of a "wow" or excitement factor when you do IPs (I love receiving packages). Just like what everyone said above, communication is key! Its far less awkward when its behind a keyboard....

Put a few extras of varying interest in your car tucked away. If he brings extras, pull them out.
