It does seem like a bold move. I dont kow of another brewery that has went that far (distance wise) and opened up another location before.

Don't get me wrong, I like Indeed. I buy indeed and visit the taproom. This still just feels like a stretch, in that they aren't that good in this crowded market. Granted, I am far from a businessperson.

Just pointing out, friend, that there is a discussion already underway. Applies to the other thread, too.

I reckon you meant -local- breweries?

Stone, Green Flash, New Belgium, Oscar Blues, and Sierra Nevada all made big moves by way of opening east coast brewery-taprooms within the past ten years or so. Lagunitas probably did, too, but my mind is a little hazed and infused right now (so I forget if they opened in Chicago or closer to all of the other west-ish to east coast transplants).

They're all worth pointing out, but didn't most, if not all, of your examples open full on mass production breweries that happened to have an attached taproom? That seems way more dangerous in today's market than merely opening a new taproom with a small brewery attached to it like Indeed is doing.

I'm struggling to come up with a situation similar to Indeed in which a relatively small production brewery opens an even smaller satellite location in a different metro area in a different state. There are chain brewpubs like Rock Bottom. Multiple taprooms are common in states that permit them, usually dotting different parts of the same metro area, and you've given some good examples of very large craft breweries creating large, distribution-oriented satellite locations that have attached taprooms (Green Flash being the cautionary tale). Lake of the Woods is doing something vaguely similar by creating a Minnesota brewery to complement the original Ontario location, but both breweries seek to serve broadly the same geographical area.

I'd be shocked if no brewery fits that mold, but I haven't come up with one. I think it's quite clever and am surprised that it's not more common (not that it's free of downsides).

I have been thinking about this move since the announcement. At first I thought what a terrible idea and now it's business model that should work. I would have gone with a 15 barrel brew house instead of a 10 barrel.

It's a good Idea. More breweries should do it. And you don't have to start from scratch, buy a existing brewery/tap room that is struggling/owners are sick of it etc.

And Summit needs to start doing collaboration brews with small breweries out of the twin cities. Out on the far edge of there current distro area as a marketing tool and attention getter.

I did buy an Indeed sample pack this spring and was not impressed for the most part. It seemed like glorified homebrew.

Nothing against Indeed but if I'm going to drive from the western suburbs to MKE to hang out at a brewery tap room, it will be in a place with local ties. Black Husky, Third Space, 1840 and Eagle Park would all be on my list before going to Indeed.
