    Hi all,

Just had a Coney Island India Pale Lager and thought it was amazing. I usually drink IPAs as I enjoy the hops. What I liked most about the IPL was that it incorporated the hop flavor that I love while maintaining a great drinkability. Can anyone recommend any IPLs? Up to this point, this is the first I am hearing about them and would like to keep exploring this style. If you can recommend any, are they common and brewed all year round?

    Thanks!

    Brian

Sam Adams Double Agent IPL is probably the most accessible. If you're in an area of New York that gets Jack's Abby distribution, any of their IPLs are top-notch.

Jack's Abby from Framingham, MA is the king of everything lagers, especially IPL's. Check out their beer list on this site. There is also Sam Adams Double Agent which is ok, Bells Quinnanan Falls Lager is awesome too. I did see that Magic Hat and Pyramid are both coming out with IPL's, but I don't have high hopes for those two beers.

Seconding this—look no further (to start, anyway) than Jack's Abby. Shit's awesome. For me, they typify and absolutely fucking nail both the "IPL" and "DIPL"*

I found I liked the most recent widmer rotator ipa series which was called hopside down and was a good ipl.

Would you say the added drinkability generally places IPLs (at this point in your limited experience) above IPAs based on your preferences?

Straub IPL if you are in the southern tier.

Ballast Point's Fathom IPL is certainly worth a look, though will be tough to locate in New York. Draft-only, but the Bruery's Humulus Lager is basically an IPL and may be one of the best beers I've tried of late.

Jack’s Abby Hoponius Union is an OUTSTANDING IPL. I would highly recommend that beer to you.

    Cheers!

@herrburgess With having only tried one, I would say maybe. If all other IPLs give similar experiences, then during the summer I would absolutely say yes. IPAs can be a bit hard to drink especially when it is quite hot out. I think an IPL would be a perfect solution to a hoppy beer in the summer which you can drink multiple of. In the winter (now), I'll be leaning towards IPAs.

I guess what I am trying to say is from my limited experience, I think they would be better depending on the season.

Short's Mmmkay is a surprisingly powerful IPL; the light body is a good showcase for enjoyably punishing hops. It shows up in bottles every once in a while.

Jacks Abby Hoponius Union and Kiwi Rising were awesome. Half Acre/Mikkeller's Guest Lager was also outstanding.

Look no further than Jack's Abby. If you get their distribution it should be easy to find Hoponius Union and Mass Rising.

Ballast Point's Fathom IPL is a good recommendation, too. I never got to try it from the bottle, but on tap it was outstanding.
