As was mentioned above, JA Hoponius, as well as their Kiwi Rising and Mass Rising. They make so many incredible lagers that it's kind of hard to choose. I believe they recently started distributing to some areas of New York, so keep an eye out man.

Ale and lager describe two different methods for making beer. Ale and lager yeast are different, as is the process by which the beer is made. Ale yeast is 'top' fermenting and lager yeast is bottom fermenting. Ales are fermented at much higher temperatures. Lagers are fermented and conditioned at much cooler temps for a much longer period of time before bottling or kegging.

Just sampled this stuff for the first time last week. Excellent stuff.

OP - this is an excellent style, and you should sample many! I really like the following in addition to Citra Mantra:

    Jack's Abby Hoponius Union
SA Double Agent IPL (extremely underrated brew IMO)
    Jack's Abby Jabby Brau
Flying Dog Atlantic Lager (not as good as the others, but still a good brew)

I know it's probably been said a million times, but I'm gonna say it anyway...

    Jack's Abby for the win.

They make some ridiculous lagers. Mass Rising and Kiwi Rising are phenomenal. Hoponius Union is such a good easy drinking brew as well. Their Wet Hop is phenomenal... and the list goes on. I could drink their brews all day every day.

Sunny Ridge was good when I had it this past weekend but I think that they make better ones. The one that has surprised me was the Hopstitution #2 that is out now. That was just an awesome beer for me. Just a great lemon bomb that was right up my alley.

Thanks for the "beer 101" lesson, but I know what distinguishes a lager from an ale.

My point (jesskidden's excellent history lesson notwithstanding) is that today virtually no brewery would think of calling a beer it brews simply "ale." They're all distinguished by the style of ale such as Scotch Ale, Pale Ale etc which gives the consumer at least some idea of what the flavor profile will be like. But there are beers out there that are simply called "lagers" as if that explains the beer's taste: Brooklyn Lager, Victory Lager, Full Sail Session Lager etc

Maybe we should just call it India Beer.

Jesse, since the OP lives in the state of New York Jack's Abby might be distributed to his area.

    Cheers!

I was under the impression that they were Mass. only. Guess not. Damn, sure would be nice if they travel the 30 miles to Rhode Island. Someday soon I hope!

They issued a press release in August 2013 that they were expanding to upstate and Hudson Valley, NY. Since that news is 6 months old, maybe they have increased to other areas of NY?

    Cheers!

And they're really surprised why nobody takes them serious ? This is on the same level of denying gravity or evolution. I know it exists but it should be treated the same as any other kind of delusion.

I think it's interesting that a number of ales have the word ale in their name, while a number of lagers do not. I think when someone says lager, they are referring to American style pale or adjunct lagers generically. If not, they would be calling them by their common names like bock, pilsner, kolsch, helles, marzen, schwarzbier, etc.

Victory's Prima Pils added the "India" to lagers way before before it was trendy. Sly Fox Pikeland Pils too. Know your roots you "IPL" whipper-snappers!

    I second this.

It's an interesting theory, but when I say "lager" I'm usually referring to the fermentation process or the cold storage process. If I'm referring to adjunct beers I'll use their "given" names. I hate lumping "lager" into something that may leave a bad taste in one's mouth.
