Recently went to enjoy a porter from one of my favorite WI craft breweries, but never got to actually tasting. I poured the bottle into a pint glass, and immediately was blown away... visually. The beer was completely full of residue. I'm not talking hazy... it was full of what seemed the size of very course salt floating throughout. I got the glass inches from my mouth, and said to heck with that. I have had this beer before and enjoyed, but it definitely wasn't like this. This was a one-off from a mixed sixer, so I did not get to test another. Any thoughts?
Without stating what beer it was you won't be able to find anyone who has had a similar experience to help pinpoint it for you. Is it a bottle-conditioned beer? How did it smell? It's likely that the floaties were just sediment, yeast, etc. but if you didn't taste it to determine off flavors, or if it didn't gush up out of your glass then it will be hard to say exactly what the issue was.
Yeah, I understand your reluctancy to "out" one of your favorite breweries, but infections happen, and it's important to let the brewery know as we'll as anyone else. I'm sure it's just an off batch, it happens with smaller breweries from time to time. Don't feel bad for naming the brewery and beer, it's the only way you'll know if other people have had similar experiences. There's a possibility it was just an off bottle as well. Was there a bottled on date? In my experience the pick 6 shelves aren't usually the freshest.
Ha! I've got enough of that already, unfortunately. The beer was Contorter Porter by Ale Asylum. Again, I love this brewery and their wares, but this was definitely off. You are all right though in that sh!t happens... we aren't condemning anyone here. That being said, I will need to look into the brewing process of this one. It did not gush when opened/poured, but you're also right... I should have sacked up and tasted. Wasn't in the mood I guess!
