So you opened one of your bottles? What are your thoughts?

I did open one of them. Nice thick imperial porter, strong bourbon nose but not overwhelming, slight vanilla aroma and flavor that comes through in the sip, and it finishes with a very smooth cherry/vanilla/malty taste. Awesome beer, very happy to have stumbled upon the release at the brewpub. Also fortunate to find people at the pub who didn't seem to care about limited releases, so I could pick up multiples. I think age will do great things for it, probably mellow the bourbon just a bit and let the other flavors shine through. Can't wait to try this again in a year.

Interesting. I heard it's a vanilla-bomb. A credible BA likened it to a BVDL junior.

Technicalities but for clarification Brewing includes Fermentation which can certainly add bacteria and wild yeast into the mix. I wouldn't call this "aging" as without this process you only have wort and not beer.

Barrel Aging on the other hand has even a higher probability of adding those undersired elements (assuming you don't want them in the beer IE sour beers)

I've never been fortunate enough to have BVDL, but I have trouble imagining that it's significantly better than this one. I'm hoping it gains that sort of rep so I can trade for a BVDL sometime in the future. I really enjoyed the cherry accents in addition to the vanilla.

Just a bit of advice: number one, this truely will never happen. Number two, most BAs don't take kindly to that comoditized mindset approach when it comes to beer. (EDIT: see below)

Touche. Fermentation absolutely is part of the brewing process, and you are correct. I should have phrased it differently.

If there is not any sort of "comoditized mindset," then how are beer trades arranged/valued? Why does BVDL have such a high value... high ratings/rarity/quality. To trade there has to be a concept of value. I much prefer bottle shares where everyone wins, but there is definitely a value consideration in trade.

BVDL is the perfect storm of high ratings, rarity, and pain in the ass to get. Add to the fact that it is nearly impossible to get multiple bottles makes the trade value about as high as possible.

I shared a bottle of Floyd D'Rue with my wife last night, and there was a drink by 6/30/14 sticker on the bottle. The only thing wrong with it at this time is how poorly the spices were done all around.
