I purchased a bottle of Nightstalker from Foremost on Ashland. The label stated that it was bottled on 11/19/2012. The beer smelled strongly of nail polish remover. In fact, that was the only smell. the taste was exactly the same. There was zero hop aroma or taste. It had a similar mouthfeel to BCBS, but the aroma and taste had me close to gagging. I have never had this beer before. Does this sound infected or is it possible this is what they were going for?

Nail Polish Remover is not what they were going for. It's a hoppy stout. You can try going back to the store you bought iy from and ask for a refund.

To provide me some education on something like this - How does a single bottle become infected if its in an automated system?

Could be something on the bottle cap (e.g. one ended up not clean/sanitized), could be the cap wasnt on securely and somthing leaked in.

edit: In fact, how secure was the bottle cap?

I wasn't paying attention to the bottle cap. However, it was a completely full bottle and it was not stained or sticky.

Infection will not likely express itself as nail polish remover. That is most likely a yeast byproduct. Esters in high quantity can taste like laqeur or varnish. Or it could be high levels of fusel alcohol. Try another bottle to see if you get the same thing. If so, you probably just don't like the beer. If not, you probably had a bad bottle.

Most off-beers are not infected. They can be flawed or off without a bug in there.

Had one that smelled awfully like pine needles. Not good.

i had one of these the other night and it was almost unbearable. a friend shared it with me so i felt like i shouldnt dump it but i was actually wondering the same thing. tasted a mix of overly sweet and a sour finish. not good. i have a bottle that i plan on aging for a while so we'll see...

I had a '12 in a 3 year vert this past Friday and was picking up an off flavor as well....wasn't sure if it was just the hoppiness/ freshness of an overly fresh brew compared to the '11 and '10 or if I was truly picking up the sourness of an infection, but the warmer it got, the worse it became.

Tasted pretty great on tap. Sweet, coffee, intensely hoppy in a vegetal sort of way. Being my first taste, I assume that was the intended flavor profile.

I wouldn't call it an "off" flavor, but the newest batch tastes like you're chewing on a hop pellet. Anyone who's homebrewed or been on a brewery tour will probably back me up on this.

Now that you put it that way, I agree..... I still disliked it though. I can't remember, but did the '10 and '11 have the same flavor when fresh?

Mine was bottled 11.19 and tasted like teriyaki, but I assumed that's what they were going for. I quite disliked the hop profile. Thankfully I was splitting with a friend.

I think there was another thread about the label saying best after 180 days from bottling.
