    Hey all,

So my friend who is studying abroad in Spain is bringing back something like 12 bottles of Cantillon he was able to pick up from the brewery for me. What we didn't think about is the fact that he isn't of drinking age in the US. I was looking for some info and tips on what to do as far as declaring vs. undeclaring his checked bag, packaging, and anything else that may be useful so that his haul doesn't get seized and we're out a good bit of money. I see mixed things on line about this but figured i would turn to my BA friends for some help. I'm interested to hear your thoughts and stories about this.

    Cheers,
    HB

I've only brought back liquor in checked baggage, so I assume beer would be similar. You're "supposed" to declare it, but depending where you're coming from the checks may be less/more thorough. Having said that, plan as though your luggage is going to be opened and inspected.

My rule of thumb is always wrap it tight in pants or a sweater, and bury it towards the corners on your luggage (preferably the bottom of the suitcase). Make certain your luggage is packed tight and there is enough stuff to cover it - have a few loose items on top. The worst case scenario I've ever come across, is my luggage was opened and a few articles of clothing (on top) were removed and looked at. I couldn't declare what I was bringing back as it was illegal regardless (185 proof rum), but I was fine.

The only issue I'd be worried about if I were you, is your friend who is underage potentially getting in trouble. Also, 12 bottles of Cantillon may raise an eyebrow based on weight alone. If you really want that much, try having it shipped to you. It may be more expensive, but no one risks getting in trouble and you're more than likely going to receive it.

    Hope this helps.

Bringing back 12 bottle of Cantillon sounds like a good idea, that won't be a problem. Being underage and bringing them back might be a bad idea. I would contact customs and see what's up...

I bring beer and wine in from Australia every year - usually at least 12 750ml bottles (often 24) .
I pack in bubble wrap and those special foam wine bottle packers in my suitcases, and declare everything every time and have a list printed up with what I have, price I paid and ABV. I also have the receipts handy. The customs people have always just waived the taxes I owe on the excess alcohol. It is too much trouble to do the paperwork fore to pay the $5 or $10 I would owe.

Your problem is much more challenging. If you don't declare it, and customs xrays the bags they will find it, and you are not going to have a fun day. It is a decent risk and they will absolutely seize the beer and probably fine you. Might even be in more trouble since it is being carried by someone underage.

I would ship it for sure. It is going to be a pain I'm the ass to organize shipping but if customs finds it losing the beer is just the start of potential problems
