I've got a friend who I'm trying to turn into the light that is craft beer. He's coming along quite nicely. One of the earliest light bulb switch moments for him is when we shared an English barleywine and he looks at me and says "Dark fruits especially black cherry." I was so proud. He loves beers the finish cleanly on his palate and don't linger long in the finish. He doesn't have a specific style, and he'll taste anything once for certain. His go to beer at a bar is Bell's Two Hearted. He also really enjoyed the couple Toppling Goliath beers we've had together. He noted the easy drinkability and juicy flavors of a beer like PsuedoSue.

I think there's a lot of promise in his palate, but I don't think he's found that beer that really makes him get "it." Which beers do you BAs think I should suggest to him or have him try to get him over the hump? Help turn a once BMC drinker only drinking to get drunk, to a true BA and someone who has a true appreciation of the craft.

If his go-to beer at a bar is Two Hearted it seems like he gets it just fine. I'd let him have his own journey from here on out, and be there with suggestions when he asks for them.

If he liked the dark fruits then give him some Belgians / Ommegang to try.

What TongoRad said. You could have stopped with Two Hearted. Buddy's well on his way, and no further work to get him off bmc is necessary.

I was thinking the same thing. If he liked "Dark Fruits" in a BarleyWine, tell him dig into a Rochefort 10.

I'd go with Boulevard Long Strange Tripel and Sixth Glass--relatively affordable compared to Chimay/Rochefort/etc and yet still excellent and complex Belgians. Nothing wrong with Rochefort though, of course.

So, we've gotten to the point now that Two Hearted and PseudoSue are considered not really getting "it" with craft beer?

I must be misunderstanding what you are saying.

Black note. Turn him to the "dark side..."

He enjoyed the beers, but it's mostly me bringing beers to him to try. I just want him to find his beer that opens his mind to the whole craft movement. Maybe TonqoRad is right maybe he is on his way. Maybe I need to be more hands off and let him have his own journey. Thanks BAs!

And I'm not trying to shit on Two-Hearted either, that's a damn fine beer!

I think he gets beers just fine, he just doesn't necessarily seek them out; I have a lot of friends like this. You should take him to the local bottleshop, help him pick out some goodies, and take him (and the beers he purchased) to Darkness Day next weekend (I see you're from MN). He'll likely get to try so many great beers that if that doesn't open his eyes far enough for you, nothing will.

Not everyone likes this as much as we do. Also, you can't make him seek out great beers. He likes and enjoys the good beer you give him, that's fine

I dunno, man, sounds like you already have him headed down the path to righteousness. I'd echo the advice to let him go and see what happens; as a wise sage once said, you can lead a man to beer, but you can't make him drink... Or something.

A few people have said to go with Belgians, so I'll throw La Fin du Monde & La Terrible into that barrel as suggestions.

Next thing you know he responds to this thread telling you to stop doubting his palate.

promise in his palate.. lol! best line I've heard in a while.

The only thing you can do is introduce him to beers you like and see what he thinks of it. some will be converted, some won't. Besides that, its not up to us to convert people, this is the job of breweries not us. I would just avoid really strong tasting beers for now like Smoked beer and Sours.
