    Good Evening all,

My inlaws are on a Viking cruise coming up for the next two weeks and me being the ticker that I am. Was trying to find the Andecher Dopplebock Dunkel. They should be flying into Amsterdam and then taking the two week cruise from there.

Ill have more details this evening.

Any tips/help on availability, Locations to get it?

    Cheers!
    James

Are they going to Heidelberg, by any chance? It is pretty readily available around here. I always imagine it being widely available since it is easy to find here, but apparently that is not necessarily the case.

Anything else on your list? What are their stops in Deutschland?

Thanks for the tip. I just got back from home and had them email me.

    They will be in:
    Cologne
    Koblenz
    Miltenburg
    Wurzburg
    Rothenburg
    Bamberg
    Nuremburg
    Regensburg

I dont even know what else to ask for from these places. I dont want them going beer shopping while they are trying to relax.

    Cheers!

Is the Andechser not available in the U.S.? I would suggest one of the Landbierparadies shops in Nuremberg. Here's a list of the breweries they carry. (My personal choices from there would be the Rossdorfer Urbrau, anything from Wagner Merkendorf, Kraus Hirschen-Trunk, and Hoenig (Keller)Pils...but that's just me!). I would think that visiting Landbierparadies will also likely be much more relaxing than trying to search through a regular Getraenkemarkt or asking random Germans where to find Andechser.

I found the Andechs for sale at the Karstadt in Wiesbaden, which was a big surprise. If they go to a city and can duck into a large store like that, have them look at the food/drink section.

When I was in Bamberg in early April, you could tell the boat had docked due to all of the American tourists walking around with a dazed look. Then again maybe not.

Andechs is not imported to the USA.

Understandable. Beer stores are often not in the Altstadts, or tourist centers, so I think your best bet would be to have them find a Galleria Kaufhof and go into the basement (where there is often a grocery section) and look for Andechs Dopplebock there. Not sure what city would be the best to find it in, but many of those towns are in Bavaria so there's a chance.

In terms of what else to recommend, Bamberg is a beer paradise. I'd recommend Spezial, Mahr's, Fassla, Klosterbräu or of course Schlenkerla if those are hard to find in your area. All are in or around the Altstadt. Herr Burgess may beg to differ () , but I'll recommend having them pick up whatever the seasonal beer is at Klosterbräu. Mühen Kölsch is a good one in Cologne but can be difficult to find from what I understand.

Anybody heard of Toom's? I just found a Google Blog where some guy posted pictures from 2010 saying they had it.

    Cheers!

I love Klosterbrau...even though I did get banned for a brief time after taking their hand-truck to transport a 20 liter keg out into the park, where the university English conversation I was "teaching" ended up staying the night! And I'm sure his parents will, like every tour-boat group, end up in the Schlenkerla (where they can visit the gift shop as well!).

I don't think it's still in season, but Klosterbräu's Maibock is delicious. I hope you have time during your upcoming visit to swing by there at least for a Schwärzla or Braunbier.

I assume you mean Mülhen Kölsch
I visited Cologne last year and saw it in a branch of Rewe. Although to be honest it sounds like FosterJM's in-laws may already have a long list.....

Yes, Mülhen. In my defense, I was typing while watching Fußball!

They should be able to find it in Amsterdam. Bierkoning should have it.

I had seen it there, too.... If they want to wait later to get it, I have bought it here, in Rothenburg: http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/10259/?view=beerfly&ba=Bierman9

It is just outside the old town walls, near the Rödertor...

    Prosit!!

First, ditto going to Galleria Kaufhof or Karstadt, the 2 major dept. store chains in Germany. Each has had it in every city I've visited. They both have grocery stores in their basements that specialize in foreign and gourmet stuff. Andechs falls under both categories, especially outside of Bayern it's considered a relative "foreign" beer.

2nd, Mühlen Kölsch is IMO the best Kölsch. I did a pub-crawl in Köln, hitting every Kölsch brewer in town, and it was the maltiest of all of them, which went well with the slightly tart dry style of Kölsch.
