This is super exciting! Cool to hear they're canning DoomTree. Any word if they'll be canning Todd the AxeMan? I've yet to try that beer.

Year round Darkness would be nice (and in cans or 12oz bottles).

Saw mention on Twitter that the restaurant won't open until April. Maybe that is just for the full menu?

My understanding is that there will be a Beer Hall (taproom) and a separate restaurant within the new Surly brewery building. The taproom also will serve food, and, according to Dara at MSPMag, it will be an extensive menu. The restaurant will take reservations while the Beer Hall will not. The Beer Hall by law definitely will be limited to serving Surly beer only, while I think the restaurant will have a full bar (but don't quote me on that). The Beer Hall opens on Friday while the restaurant will not open until spring. Jorge Guzman, formerly of Solera, is the chef behind the menus at both the Beer Hall and the restaurant. The separation of taproom and restaurant sounds to me like an end-around around the fact that brewpubs in Minnesota aren't able to distribute their beer off-site., and more power to Surly for figuring out a creative way around a law that is unfriendly to consumers and breweries alike.

I apologize if I'm relaying inaccurate information, but this has long been my understanding. I haven't been able to locate an individual article that spells out the explanation explicitly; I've pieced this together from various sources.

Makes perfect sense. Hopefully it will be similar to the menu at 3 Floyds restaurant. Not too expensive but not super cheap either but with high quality ingredients.

Construction regularly goes over its estimated budget. Nothing to see here.

Your information on separate liquor is incorrect. There will only be Surly beer served, and that includes the restaurant and event center. No wine, no liquor, no guest taps.

Thanks for the correction. That makes sense given the taproom/brewpub legal distinction. I had thought this might be a situation akin to a liquor store at a grocery store with a separate entrance, but I was being naive. In my defense, I find it difficult continually to have to turn off my brain in order to comprehend Minnesota's alcohol regulatory scheme.

I have Friday off. I might have to go. How cool would it be to say you had the very first pint or snifter at Surly's new brewery.

    Surly email:

It's Finally Here - The Destination Brewery Cometh

This Friday, December 19, we will open the doors of Surly Brewing MSP. Thank you for your support through this whole process, we say it a lot but we mean it, we really couldn't have done any of this without you. Thank you, Surly Nation.

Back in 2010, we had a simple idea: Let's build a new brewery where we can serve folks our beer and a meal. A place where friends and families could gather for celebrations and get-togethers, dining and snacking, imbibing and drinking.

To make that happen, we needed the support of so many people to help us change the law, find, design, and build a place where we can share the Surly experience. Now, after some long days and longer nights, we're ready to open our doors.

The Beer Hall and kitchen will open at 11am on Friday, December 19. We'll have more than a dozen of our beers on tap and a full-service food menu. Regular hours for the Beer Hall will be 11am - 11pm, Sunday through Thursday, and 11am - 12am, Friday and Saturday.

We accept Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover credit cards and we ID EVERYONE. If under 21, you must be accompanied by an adult. As always, don't be a dick or we have the right to throw you out, and always be respectful of our neighbors when you leave.

We do not sell growlers and there are no off-sales at the Beer Hall. It's the law.

Our new home is at 520 Malcolm Avenue SE in Minneapolis. There's ample parking, but we recommend you take advantage of the Light Rail Train line as we're a short walk from the Prospect Park stop on the Green Line. To celebrate our first weekend, the good folks at MN Transit are offering FREE public transport from 6pm-3am on Friday, December 19 and 10am-3am on Saturday, December 20. Click HERE for the downloadable free pass that you'll need to print out.

We're also close to the Dinkytown Greenway/University of Minnesota Transitway and have plenty of bike racks.

Make sure to follow our new Twitter handle, @SurlyBeerHall for all updates from our new home, and check out the website to see what's on tap.
Klean Kanteenstainless steel pints, tumblers and bottles.

Make sure to stop by on your way into and out of the Beer Hall. ROLEC.

You can check out all our new tanks and equipment when you visit the Beer Hall, and you'll be able to enjoy all that extra beer in bars and liquor stores all over Minnesota and beyond. In 2015 we'll be able to increase our reach across the Upper Midwest. Keep an eye out for expansion announcements soon.
Also, make sure to read this interview with Todd in The Growler magazine. He told them about the new brewhouse design, brewing at Surly MSP and what makes our brewing team tick.

    Their food menu sounds awesome!

    Also from the email:

    Surly Food
Our chef-driven, craft-beer inspired Beer Hall kitchen will also be open this Friday, with the same hours as the Beer Hall.

Our Executive Chef, Jorge Guzman and his team have been working hard in the Surly kitchen to create an amazing menu of food that tastes good with beer. It all folds together under the management of Surly's Head of Restaurant Operations, Linda Haug.

You'll be able to enjoy such dishes like 'hog frites', which Jorge refers to as a "bastardized poutine" with smoked pork and pepper jack fondue. The Surly culinary team have put together a bold menu, which has approachable items like burgers and fried chicken, but also some more exciting, upscale items like bone marrow, beef cheek birria, house made charcuterie, foie gras and much more.

You can also choose from a range of smoked meats prepared on-site, including Polish Sausage, Pulled Pork Shoulder and Sliced Brisket.

When you come to the Beer Hall, make sure to ask our staff to help pair your beer with a meal.

Split a handful of items with a buddy during lunch there today.

Hog Frites were definitely good, but I'd strongly suggest ordering the (duck fat) Fried Chicken or the Shrimp and Grits. (We also had the brisket, but I don't think I'd order it again)

The Mac & Cheese was very good; however, the roasted cauliflower stole the show for me. I'd order that again and again.

Went for lunch as well. The brewery itself is rather impressive and gorgeous. The food was good. Had the pork shoulder with beans. Friend had the burger and he wasn't super impressed. I don't really like that it literally is just a restaruant. I was thinking more just beer hall. Go in, find a spot. Sit, order a beer. Order food if you want.
