Hey guys/gals. I am looking to make a road trip to Williamsburg and Delaware. Are there any awesome breweries/pubs that I should look for? Btw I will be there aug 15-22. Thank you.
@Roland I'm living in Wilmington DE for the summer and can say there isn't much here. Trolley Tap House is a pretty good option if you want a pub, but they don't have all that much that's rare. Two Stones Pub is also decent, but again, nothing super rare. Both have pretty decent food. If you're up this far in DE, it's definitely worth driving the extra 30-40 minutes to check out Tired Hands. I normally live in Virginia so have plenty of recommendations for there depending on where you are. Richmond has some really great spots: Mekong and The Answer (both next door to each other) I would highly, highly recommend. Hardywood is worth stopping by if you have a lot of time in Richmond. Williamsburg doesn't have all that much outside of Alewerks, but not a bad place to stop. If you want good BBQ, hit up Pierce's. I can maybe provide some more input if you let me know what cities you're planning to hit.
Agreed, in Williamsburg you should head to Williamsburg Alewerks. While in DE you should check out DFH for sure, and 16 Mile, Mispillion, and 3rd Wave are also worth a stop depending on how much time you have. Just across the state line in MD you should hit up Evolution and Burley Oak.
When I lived in VA we did a weekend in Williamsburg (~3 years ago). Went to Williamsburg Alewerks and it was more or less a tiny gift shop where you could taste their beers and it was a CF, didn't even stick around to try anything... Did we miss something? Always thought some of their beers were worth getting but the source seemed like a waste of time.
Also, re: food in Williamsburg, we hit Blue Talon Bistro, which was in the historic area and was worth going to (not for craft beer). Food was good at a reasonable price. For craft, we visited DoG Street Pub at lunch time and it was okay. It sits in the historic area as well, it was VERY crowded mid-day, beer options were medium quality. No home runs, but some worthy options. Also visited Green Leafe cafe which was a dive but more chill than DoG. Again, beer list was okay, maybe a little better than DoG IIRC (it was years ago).
Their tasting room just about doubled in size about a year ago, and just a few weeks back they added an outdoor seating area. Definitely worth visiting. Also, make sure you go to Hair of the DoG; DoG St. opened a bottleshop that rivals any in Virginia, and it also has a bar, does growler fills, etc. The selection is fantastic, too.
Thank you all for some great info. We will be hitting Richmond for sure. We will be staying in Williamsburg for 3 days and will be staying at the DFH inn for 2 days.
It's not bad... a little overpriced and subpar in my opinion. There are a number of better options just steps away. Barrett's has nice outdoor seating and offers pitchers of some okay craft beer (almost all VA options which is cool, but nothing spectacular), but the tap list, food, and prices are all definitely beat by Dog St... Barrett's is much more geared towards nicer dining with seafood options; but even in that arena, beer aside, I think there are a number of better options in Williamsburg.
If you're looking for some other good options in Williamsburg, food-wise: Aroma's is an awesome little coffee shop with decent lunch/breakfast options Blue Talon Bistro has fantastic food, and so does Second St. Grill and make sure to check out the famous Cheese Shop, and don't miss its underground cellar with some great beer options
