Just received a newsletter from the local store I frequent, and was impressed with what they have coming up:

"This week we celebrate our third anniversary with a St. Pat's Irish whiskey and stout tasting; we're launching a brand-new monthly wine education series in April; plus we're also working on organizing a brewery tour to Grand Rapids AND we're having our very own exclusive label bourbon barrel-aged stout (called Big Tony's) made just for you guys - in fact, it's aging right now!"

I think that last two are especially great, especially the Buffalo Trace Barrel-aged Stout that they are having made for them by a (fantastic) local brewery.

I have heard of stores doing tastings, but is the rest of this unusual for stores? What does your local store do that is special?

Stores around my parts do all sorts of tastings every single week, but seldom are they of the variety that I'll actually attend. Mostly wine and whiskeys. I'm always looking out for the next pumpkin beer tasting though, even though last years was lame as hell. Two years ago everyone was there with the orange stuff, but last year... only shock top. Though, that time it wasn't really advertised as a "pumpkin" fest, more of a seasonal thing. As for interesting stuff, the shops around here have absolutely nothing interesting going on ever, apart from never having any kind of sale whatsoever. At least when you buy a six pack or a bomber at these gatherings the reps will give out something for free... like a pint glass, or stickers, or coasters, or bottle openers, or rohypnol, or posters, or free advice, or info on the next big release, or samples, or more samples, or uncomfortable company, or a date, or a chance to mingle with the other sophisticated alcoholics, or even sometimes nothin'. Yeah. Fun, interesting stuff.

    Jeez...count your blessings.

The coolest thing our best store in town is labeling the employee's favorite products. Like "Gene's pick of the month." I know Gene, and I know he has good taste in beer, so I trust his pick.

That sounds even lamer now that I've typed it out...

No, it's not unusual. A few stores around here have done such things.

So what's Gene's pick of the month this month?

Gene is apparently fond of Odell Lugene Chocolate Milk Stout. Per Gene's recommendation, I found that I'm rather fond of it also.

My store lets me buy a fair amount of beer on some what of a regular basis. Some of them even carry some whiskey for me to pick up too. I really cannot ask for more.
