Now I want to get some Pilsner Urquell to see if I can taste the pitch. I would try anything from Godspeed. Thanks for the post.

Since the 1990s, the modern Pilsner Urquell commonly found in bottles, cans and kegs, is no longer lagered in the pitch-coated wood casks. The brewery sometimes ships unpasteurized, unfiltered kegs of what they call "Pilsner Urquell Nefiltrovaný (from the Wood)" but they're pretty rare on this side of the Atlantic. Confusingly, there are also kegs of unfiltered P.U., but they are fermented and lagered in stainless.

Unlike Budweiser Budvar, which remains state-owned, Plzeňský Prazdroj was privatized and eventually owned by international brewing companies SABMiller and now Asahi.

Some photos of pitching the casks at Plzeňský Prazdroj over the years.

Indeed. In my opinion Godspeed is the best brewery in Toronto and make the best lagers of any Canadian brewery from those I’ve tried.

This one was my favourite so far, a one-off that I’ve said before is the best locally made beer I’ve had in ages:

I think all their Czech style lagers - including the 1.5% ABV one - as well as their Dortmunder are top notch. I also enjoy most of their hoppy new world lagers too.

Something else you should put on your bucket list is a visit to the Czech Republic with a visit to the Pilsner Urquell (Plzeňský Prazdroj) in the city of Plzeň.

I visited in 2019 and took a tour of the Pilsner Urquell brewery. Towards the end of the tour they take you to the cellar brewery where they serve you a glass of unfiltered and nonpasteurized Pilsner Urquell that was fermented and lagered in the cellar brewery.

Below is Jacob pouring my beer directly from the pitch lined oak barrel in the cellar brewery:

In the above linked Toronto Sun article there is mention of the Czechvar (Budějovický Budvar brewery) brewer Adam Brož. Below is a video which includes Adam Brož providing more brewing details on their beer branded as Czechvar in the US.

I was able to order a few cans of the Czechvar collaboration and will share my thoughts when I have it. A few will also be travelling to participants in the NBW BIF in the coming weeks.
