Just saw this on my G+ beer circle. An interview with Sam Sherwood of the Walldorff in Hastings Michigan, which definitely has some following around here.

    Thanks for posting this, Tim.

The Walldorff does not get the credit or attention that it deserves! It is located dead center of arguably the most popular craft beer area in the nation...couldn't ask for a better area to be in! I have lived in Hastings my whole life and I can say without a doubt that The Walldorff helped this little town get recognized as a great tourist attraction of the state of Michigan!

It is good that there are local hop growers. One does need to understand that hops were grown in NY and Wisconsin, but the growing moved to the west where it is dry, and less chance of mildew and wilt ruining the crop. They also get higher yields per acre.

The established growers in the west will also have the price advantage.

If Michigan were to have its own hop variety, then MSU should start a hop breeding program to develope that over the next 10-12 years. That is how long it takes to bring a new variety to market.
