How is this for 'irony' the other beer I bought today was a six-pack of Weihenstephaner Pilsner and the bottles have a date code 8041.I forgot to bring my Little Orphan Annie decoder but luckily I remembered the last digit means the year (2021). I go home and pulled out my Little Orphan Annie decoder to determine this beer was bottled in the 4th week of 2021. Pretty darn fresh for a German import.

I won the lottery twice today!

    Prost!

At that same retailer I thought about buying a six-pack of Augustiner but I pulled out a bottle to see it was bottled in 2018. Unfortunately that is more representative of what I find on the shelves as regards German brewed beers. :slight_frown:

    Cheers!

P.S. Needless to say I just put that Augustiner back on the shelf.

I recommend buying as many different styles of the German imports that you find that are reasonably fresh.

Use these beers as a baseline for comparison with their American counterparts.

Look for fresh beers such as Hefeweizen, Helles, Altbier on draught locally.

Lighter German styles should become more available as the weather warms, Kolsch, Gose, Berliner Weisse, Pilsner and Keller Bier are perfect for hot afternoons.

I see you trade @BigIronH , Jack's Abbey from Mass. and von Trapp in Vermont make excellent true-to-style beers. Jack's Abbey's beers tend to be hoppy, von Trapp has a small line of Austrian influenced classic German styles which in my opinion are the best in the U.S...A.

If you like beers with malt ahead of hops, a tendency towards lighter bodied and plenty of flavor, you can't go wrong with a well made (and fresh) German/style beer.

    Prost.

And you probably only missed about half of your appointments/events and, well, most of those you really didn't want to go to anyway, right?

I second this. While some people will really take to a Rauchbier or a Doppelbock right away, I would start with the lighter, more subtle styles. Weihenstephaner is a great place to start. Especially Hefeweizen. I think that it’s a style that most people really find enjoyable even if they haven’t had it because of the wheat and the banana. Although don’t think of ABV when keeping lighter. Hofbrau Maibock would be a good one to try since a Maibock has a very delicate flavor profile.
