I just tried an inverted pour with a FD In-heat what, and it came out great. The head lasted until the last sip, about 6 minutes I'm guessing. The reviews here tend to indicate on the negative side for head production and retention.

So the question is, does the inverted pour contribute to the nice head?

I don't know what the inverted pour is, but it sounds like my wife needs to learn it!

Looks like a ton of foam, I can see why the head would last a while.

Here's what it looked like after about 10 seconds:

Fair enough, couldn't get that far from the video. Is it recommended to use a larger glass for this technique? For example, if I use a 16oz glass will it risk foaming over from a 12oz bottle?

Good question. I reckon if the beer is cold, pulled from the fridge, it would work but I could be wrong and I'm too chicken to give it a go to find out for myself.

my weihenstephaner holds head longer than that with a good pour. Gotta roll the bottle on its side with a few ounces left to max out the carb and head.

OP - certain Guiness glasses are designed to do an inverted pour with a nitro can. I have one, and its awesome.

If I had a chilled Hefe I would give it a go right now, unfortunately I only have imp. stouts and barleywines in the fridge at the moment. The lady is out of town and it will be a long and dru.... well, a tasty night.

Interesting, shoud this be only done with a hefeweizen glass and not a pint glass?

Depends on the bottle youre using. 12 ounce bottle = pint. bigger bottle = hefe glass. A standard hefe (or as Buffalo Wild Wings and other places call a Pilsner glass--oh the horror) is 500mL; so a 500mL bottle fits perfectly. pour it out, the large head fills the bulb part. When theres like a an ounce or two left, you lay the bottle on its side and roll it like a rolling pin gently. then pour it (sediment and all) into the glass.

my buddy told me he saw bartenders in Germany doing it everywhere.

Well, I just threw caution to the wind and went for it with a Bell's expedition stout in a pint glass. I have to say it did not turn out too well, maybe I missed something.

All and all probably only lost an ounce or so of beer, not the end of the world.

The quality of this pour really depends on the speed that you lift the bottle out

Yeah, I figured that there would be some hate for spilling such a great beer, I too cried a little bit. But I had to give it a shot. Will it sooth your anger if I told you I sucked it off the counter with a straw?

I take it you are saying that you have to give it quick and smooth pull out?

Smooth, but not too quick. You want to keep the lip of the bottle just under the level of the beer as you pull it up. This keeps it from glugging too much which creates a lot of foam. This guy does a good job of explaining it
