Heading to Iowa City next weekend and am looking for a beer restaurant to hit with the family. Is Sanctuary the best option and is it kid friendly if we go early?
If you have transportation and don't mind driving about 10 minutes out to North Liberty, Red's Ale House would be my recommendation. http://redsalehouse.com/ Sanctuary is solid though too...
Before I graduated, they had an amazing place called Baldie's for wraps right on the main drag by the Pentacrest next to Iowa Book. This has since closed and been re-opened as a Burger and Iowa craft beer place. I believe Nate Kaeding is a main backer. http://www.shortsburgerandshine.com/
I 2nd the notion of Red's. Never been there, but tons of people rave about that place. It's supposed to be the best in the area. Seems like they get some real good stuff in there all the time.
Your best bet for selection, kid-friendly, and quality food is Red's in North Liberty. I will be there next Saturday as they are hosting this event: http://redsalehouse.com/2012/08/homecoming-hog-roast-with-rustik-rooster/
Sanctuary is not really kid friendly, its mostly a bar. Shorts is good get all iowa beer on tap. Reds would be the best bet for a family restaurant. Usually have good tap and bottle lists. Food is decent as well.
Short's for all Iowa beers and good burgers. Red's for extensive beer list, including most available at Short's, more diverse menu and kid friendly (even my ruffians).
