It'll be a miss. You'll definitely be able to take home a growler or two though.

It seems like the Stone special releases and collabs have moved pretty well besides Old Guardian. I wish we would have received the Dayman IPA and hopefully we get the Coconut IPA.

I didn't know that Enjoy By was out yet! Thanks! Is WootStout sold out everywhere? It seems like the R&R Coconut IPA was a miss...still several cases around the area. The only other Stone release I've seen do this is Old Guardian. I picked up a bottle of the 17th, seems like it could be a good beer. Also, if you have access to Schell's Star Of The North, PICK UP A BOTTLE.

Star of the North was in at Benz in CR a couple weeks ago. Didn't make it in to pick it up and forgot about it. Wonder if they still have some.

Is Enjoy by in Cedar Rapids yet? I got the 17th anniversary at the Oakland Road HyVee there yesterday but they didn't have the Enjoy By yet.

Des Moines is swimming in Enjoy By right now. I hear the metro got 120 cases total and although that is a LOT, it will not last long I'm sure. 17th Anniversary is dropping in Des Moines today. Should be on shelves already. I've also seen RuinTen, Imperial Russian Stout, Espresso IRS, Old Guardian and R&R Coconut at multiple locations too. There is still Founder's Mango Magnifico around too.

Also, hear that next week DSM will get "extremely limited" quantities of Bell's Oracle DIPA.

It's not in the Eastern half of the state yet it seems. I just called HyVee and they said the local distributor hasn't gotten it yet.

Mango Magnifico was put on tap at Red's in N.L. last night. I had a sample. Nice mango on the tongue, and a hella burn on the throat. I'd pass.

Picked up Enjoy By at the HyVee on Oakland Road in Cedar Rapids for $6.99/bottle. Also saw that the Coralville store got theirs as well, although at $1 more per bottle @ $7.99/ea. I don't really get how 2 markets only about 25 miles apart have such a large price gap between the same company.

If Benz competes with Oakland Road's pricing again, they might have theirs set at $6.49 like they did the 17th Anniversary bottle. Oakland Rd has the Century Club so I figure I'll just continuing picking up my stuff from there as long they keep getting in the new stuff.

Can't wait to put this in a fridge and hopefully able to try tomorrow night!

I got 3 at the 42nd street hy-vee in Des Moines for $5.99. Prices do vary.

Oh I understand they vary, I Just think it's weird they range from (now) $5.99 to $7.99 depending on where you live in the state.

Haha. I wasn't very clear. I definitely agree with you. It is strange. I could've driven 10 minutes in any direction and found another price. I'm pretty sure WineStyles in West Des Moines was probably 8.49 or more like they usually are.

Not trying to be a dick but what's weird about different places have different markups/margins? I'm sure the cost from the distributor was the same all around.

  23. mattafett

    mattafett Initiate (0) Mar 9, 2009 Iowa

I seriously doubt the cost is the same for everyone at the distributer level. I'm sure Hy-vee pays less than Benz, because of the volume they sell. It's called buying power.

I have always heard that Stone doesn't allow distributors to offer case discounts on their products to retailers.

Also, purchasing by Hy-Vee's is done on a store by store basis, so are they really ordering that much more than Benz? (I wouldn't know).

The law makes it that you have to offer the same discount to everyone. I.e. if you offer $2 off Rogue 6-pack cases when a retailer orders 5 or more then you have to do that for every retailer.

As someone who works at a beer store (Beertopia in Omaha) I was surprised to find you really don't have to order all that much to get the discounts (some of which are the same every month while other discounts come and go). Cheers!

    edit:
    http://www.bevnet.com/magazine/issue/2012/the-man-behind-the-megaphone-stone-brewing-co-s-greg-koch

Koch recalls his first meeting with a buyer for Safeway, North America’s second-largest supermarket chain, in 1998. The buyer was baffled when Koch said he wouldn’t be offering any promotional pricing in exchange for shelf space.
“When I left that meeting, I was pretty certain that we were s—t out of luck,” he said.
A few weeks later, a Safeway purchase order came across Koch’s desk, no doubt a nod to his steadfast refusal to play the price war.
“We’ve had a lot of pressure to price discount over the years and we never have,” Koch said. “Our job isn’t to discount, but to make sure that our beer is worth the price from a consumer and retailer perspective.”

Anyone have knowledge of how many varieties of Deschutes we will likely see in Iowa? Glad that I was finally able to find Fresh Squeezed, but I was looking through their other seasonal and special bottlings and they looked very tasty. Thanks!

They did a dopplebock in scotch barrels. I've sampled it, once at the Brewfest in DSM on the Locust Bridge and once at the brewery. It's fantastic.

I picked up several Enjoy Bys from Chicago over the weekend. If anyone in the Iowa City/Cedar Rapids area missed out and wants one, we can trade.

Parlor City in Cedar Rapids is having a Stone tap takeover Friday. Nothing too special except for the Templeton Rye Barrel aged IRS. I hope this beer is as great as I imagine it to be. Red's in North Liberty is tapping a keg soon, too.
