has anyone ever been given "old" beer in a trade?
    What have been your reactions?
Is it worth mentioning to someone?
    How soon afterwards?

Is this plain courtesy to not give old beer in a trade?

Not sure what this has to do with being "in-person".

has anyone ever been given "old" beer in a trade? - yes

What have been your reactions? - ranging from mild disappointment to "would not trade with again" based on how central it was to the trade and the beer in question.

Is it worth mentioning to someone? - probably not

Is this plain courtesy to not give old beer in a trade? - yes

A lot of the answers you seek would depend on the answers to these questions:

-Is the "old" beer in question the core of the trade?
    -An extra?
    -What style is it?
-Did you specifically ask ahead of time how old it was?
-Did they tell you a date, but the delivered beer was older?

Sorry, I'm bad about responding to a question with more questions

Wait, you got old beer in an IP trade, but didn't find out until later? Or, did you notice it at the time, cancel the trade. and are you now wondering if you should alert us that someone showed up with old beer?

One of the benefits of an IP trade is ability to examine what you get.

If it was me, and he/she showed up with old beer I would be kinda upset I wasted time and travel expense, and the trade would be cancelled at that time too.

has anyone ever been given "old" beer in a trade? Old? Like old IPAs? Yeah it's happened. If it's an older vintage of a stout and I didn't specifically ask for a vintage I don't complain (Not saying you're complaining)
What have been your reactions? If a stout or ageable beer I'm happy. IPA disappointed but if not central point take it with a grain of salt.
Is it worth mentioning to someone? To my friends I'll mention it, but it's not worth the effort if it's an extra in the IP trade
    How soon afterwards? See above

Is this plain courtesy to not give old beer in a trade? Fresh beer is meant to be fresh. Drink it yourself once it reaches a consensus old beer. Or explain why you're giving it. Had someone give me an older IPA on purpose as an extra and told me it develops in a fun way at 6 months. He was right not my favorite but it was definitely different from what I was expecting and he was upfront about his reasoning

Ok last question I promise, are we talking a month old, or a year old? Some folks have different opinions on IPA freshness

Canned early January. Traded mid March. I suppose dates can mean anything.
Its that taste. That fumpy earth-toned woody dirt wood sour twig chomp taste that decomposed hops turn into.

I think this is definitely a case of caveat emptor. And hard lessons are remembered best. Chalk it up as a learning experience and move on.

What beer was it? You learned a valuable lesson, always ask about dates before trading.

Getting a 2 month old IPA now means running to the internet to complain?

Probably just need to chalk it up to a lesson learned, since you can't/don't know the traders intentions. Probably worthwhile to discuss canning/bottling dates when trading IPAs, just so everyone is on the same page.
