I've got a pumpkin ale in the fermenter sitting on a vial of WLP002 ready to be bottled today. I want to brew an American IPA to pitch on top of the yeast cake.

Heres the recipe I've come up with: http://hopville.com/recipe/1662049

I don't want to use any crystal malt, as the yeast is already pretty low attenuating. However, I want to add 1/2oz of black patent malt to give it a hint of color. Is that too much?

Will 4oz of hops in a 2.5 gallon batch be enough?

    Thanks!

1/2 oz is not too much black patent.

4 oz hops / 2.5 gallons would be enough for me. YMMV.

I added 1 oz of black patent to this 5 gal batch for color: http://hopville.com/recipe/1652301

I'd say final srm is in the 9-11 copperish range.

Hops look fine to me. I like to throw a lb or so of wheat into a recipe like that for some extra proteins for head retention/body.

    Good luck!

don't use black patent if you want to add color unless you're also looking for a harsher, more astringent roastiness. you're much better off with carafa III special or midnight wheat, which are both husk-less. otherwise it looks pretty good.

Well I already started the mash! I ended up using .4oz of black patent malt, so hopefully the color comes out just a hint red.

I ended up having only 7 pounds of 2-row left, so I went with that, and cut my magnum hops to only .5 oz for 60 minutes. Hopefully it will still be bitter enough, as it calculates at around 90IBU's.

you'll be fine, and if you're only using enough to redden it, that'd probably work well. i just did a black ipa so i'm still in that mindset and assumed you wanted to blacken the beer, which would have made black patent the wrong choice.
