I mean theres definitely gullible people. But would you consider a guy in a big craft store walking the aisles checking his/her phone for all the '90' and above beer scores gu:sunglasses:llible???..
I mean Im 100% on Cold IPA being fkn absurd. Yes way too many subsets. I never disagreed there were too many murk bombs. Then we have to say HT is a NEIPA and so is TH Julius...?

Are you putting both in the trash? If they are backdooring to lagers, I'm all for it!

I don’t know anymore. I’m just putting beeradvocate in the trash at this point, and enjoying good beer without criticism.

    Once a month(or more), this thread gets re-created and BA’s have essentially divided into two camps;

You have the “everyone should drink what they want” crowd, who realizes breweries are only doing what they feel will make them profitable in their market. If you want a lager, find a brewery that does them well and patronize them. I know it’s not that easy for everyone in the world but essentially, what other choice do you have?

You then have the crowd that seems perpetually upset with the fact that their favorite styles have lost shelf space year over year to styles that they don’t prefer. No, not all IPA’s are excellent or even done well. No, not all IPA’s are going to fit under everyone’s criteria of what they think an IPA should entail style wise.

No matter which end of the spectrum you consider yourself to be on(maybe somewhere in the middle?), I think it can be agreed upon by most of us that beer is an ever evolving concept. I personally have seen a huge uptick of local breweries focusing on English styles and lagers over the past year which has led to more variety in my fridge.

    Cheers.

Why not just look ahead and go to places that have beers you want yo drink instead of go to places where the selection is an issue?

At least we have... uh... winter... to ease the IPA overload and get the stouts/porters/holiday spicy stuff out. About 3-4 months ago I was like "please, breweries, make some stouts.." And lots of breweries answered, thankfully.

This is interesting to me. Being a resident of New England, home of the modern ipa, even the “hype” breweries generally knock out variety, and there is no shortage of classic beers (pils, lagers, etc).

But yeah, for example, tree house has two bars, one for more modern beers, and one for “classics”, it’s very clear which one draws more, it’s not the classics, even though they do them as good as any.

I’ve often tried to like twice but it always results in an “Unlike”. Maybe you can do something about this.

I planned to hit up a new to me brewery after buying a couple of single cans, after looking at the menu with 22
    listed beers....
    7 NE/ hazy DIPA's
    1 NE/ hazy TIPA
    1 DIPA
    1 DIPA/Milkshake
    2 Seltzers
    1 Fruit Beer
    1 Fruited Sour
    3 Lager
    3 Impy Stouts
    1 Impy Porter
    1 Wheat Beer
Does anyone need 7 NEIPA's on tap? I'm just sayin'

I drank IPAs almost exclusively for my first year as a "Craft Beer" fan. I felt a need to try different styles and soon realized that I prefer malt over hop flavor.
After a few years of complaining about IPAs taking over shelf space at nearby stores, I ventured out into the world of small breweries and taprooms.

Thanks to the info available on BA. I am able to find nearby breweries that meet my requirements, which are, less IPAs and more traditional malt forward styles.

Now, to be clear, my searches have been mostly limited to Southern New England and South West Florida. I can find brewery fresh, malt forward and traditional styles relatively easily. I can't speaks for the rest of the world, however, I do believe that with some effort, most people's beer finding goals can be realized. Cheers.

When I researched a trip to Phoenix, Wren House was the only brewery I found with this criteria before visiting. I enjoyed my visit, the beer was good to very good.

I didn't have time for The Wandering Tortoise which had a good tap list. However, when I check their tap list today, it's heavily stacked (Haze and Sours).

Are there any other breweries or craft beer bars that fit the bill for your group? Would be interested in your response for my next trip to Phoenix.

I feel this is a slightly different conversation.

Taprooms / Breweries with a quality mix of styles available vs. off-site package availability. There are breweries which are solid/great at a particular style, but I'm not apt to go to their taproom if a single style is the primary option. Will still pick up their beers for home.

My favorite breweries to visit are those who can brew quality beers across multiple styles. I prefer having a few different beers and styles when visiting a brewery or bar.

These breweries have fit the bill in terms of repeat visits:

CA (Beachwood, AleSmith); IL (Revolution, Spiteful, Dovetail); NV (Tenaya Creek) & WI (3 Sheeps). RIP 3 Floyds Taproom :slight_frown:

Firestone Walker, Sierra Nevada, Heretic and Russian River are future California targets

PA-Michigander, no I have not heard of that group. I will check them out though and thanks for the info. I am also a PA transplant. PA breweries are very competitive and overall better than the AZ beer scene, but we are catching up. Just a number of years behind many other great brewing states.

I agree with you and I too seem to gravitate towards breweries that do multiple styles well. I’m not arguing that point. But the fact stands that breweries are doing what they think makes them profitable. Even if you and I don’t go there, someone is. And if not, they will inevitably close. Cheers.

After that talk about my preference for malt-forward styles I have selected a Westcoast IPA for after lunch.

This is Hops in the Lab, a collaboration of Ankrolab and Hopsized. Its Hoppy as hell yet it has a toasted malt backbone.

I'm I a big hypocrite or is this a fair compromise? Cheers.
