Why? They taste amazing and make me happy. If all other styles of beer disappeared and only IPA remained I would be pretty much ok with that. IPAs are seriously one of my favorite things in life.

i don't like how IPAs are slowly being considered "hipster" beer since gaining in popularity. i've enjoyed them years and years! and they're suddenly hipster to drink?

August 2013 reports shows Stouts and Porters account for 13% of craft market, whereas all Pale Ales (amber and india included) account for 41%

Yeah, that's why I always cite the source I'm quoting since such figures are seldom released by the company.

As I noted, the IRI Symphony figures are not exact and are based on only certain types off-premise retailers, but they are the most commonly used in the industry (by Modern Brewery Age and the Brewers Association for just two examples) and are an accepted overview of the industry. They breakdown the craft beer "styles" into about two dozen actual styles, along with vague marketing categories like "Seasonal" "Variety" and "Unknown" - rather than the mere four in the IBISWorld chart.

As seen from the snip below from the mid-2013 numbers they have the Stout and Porter together being 2% based on "case share of the (craft) catalog".

And here's a IRI Sympathy pie chart (based on sales, not volume) from 2012 of their top 10 styles - with porter/stout not even making the list.

Given that there are no porters or stout on IRI's list of top craft brands or craft packages, it does seem impossible for the percentage of craft porters and stouts to be 13% - which would be 1.7m bbl. of beer! - as noted in the link which uses the IRISWorld "revenue" figures.

Ive had 2 true named IPAs that Ive enjoyed In all the years Ive drank beers Its not something I seek out and usually when I get something similar to an IPA it was snuck into another style and i hate that

So the IBISworld report is totally wrong? I am not arguing your citation, but two reports seems to show different information. I dont get the sense that IBISWorld is a very unreputable source. Why such a difference of information?

Not for me they aren't. I can't stand them. I'll take a Scotch Ale, English Bitter, Porter or a brown ale any day.

According to that chart, there must be a very high number of Stouts/porters that are grouped in the Seasonal or Variety sales though. I find it hard to believe that craft "bocks" outsell stouts/porters. I am guessing that most of the bock sales are from Shiner Bock?

I am really sick of people dismissing everything they don't like as much as other people as "hype"... jesus.

I am a hophead. I crave hops pretty much all the time. I can't get enough. I enjoy other styles and beers too but I will usually choose the DIPA. I guess it's something people don't understand if they aren't crazy about hops like so many of us are.

I'm not crazy about dubbels and tripels personally. But that doesn't mean everyone who loves them is just buying the Belgian hype and the whole style is overrated. It just means they have different tastes than I do.

How many stouts are seasonal? I hate how they break it down to "craft seasonal" and "craft variety". Why don't they segment that into styles? So Celebration Ale and Stone Russian Imperial Stout go under "craft seasonal"?

I love all of them... Also I was personally asking IF! it was hype. In fairness, Belgiums (or insert any style) arnt as sought after as an IPA. I feel like many can be just as good. I wasn't so much puting down the style as much as I was wondering why other styles get 'less' love.

I get more worked up over a great stout than a great IPA, but I prefer to have one of each on any given day.

Yeah, according to IRI data, Shiner Bock is usually listed as the 3rd best selling "craft beer" by volume (after Boston Lager and SN Pale Ale, although by dollar Fat Tire sometimes tops it, too), accounting for over 4% of the category by itself.

I assume it's because many breweries use the same SKU and/or UPC for their seasonals and different variety packs, etc. (like the below receipt for a case of SN Celebration Ale), and that is how these marketing research firms collect their data from the retailers.

Don't know anything about IBISWorld - as I noted, I quote the IRI figures because they are recognized and commonly used within the industry. IBISWorld is more investment-related and (though hardly unique) there are a number of eye-raising > incorrect statements in that "report".

It gets the name and common abbreviation of the Brewers Association wrong, it misstates the B.A.'s definition of "microbrewery", it lists the ATF as responsible for labeling and other regulations that now (since 2003) fall under the TTB's responsibility. It states:
But The Beer Institute's Brewers Almanac page "PER CAPITA CONSUMPTION OF BEER BY STATE 1994 - 2011" doesn't show that at all.

Then there are statements about beer like:
