Its no secret that there are more IPAs or DIPAs than one could ever try...
So should there be some sort of "sub-category" to break it down a bit more?

    Something like:

    "Piney"
    "Citrusy"
    "Candy"

    Or

    "sweet IPA" and "Bitter IPA"

I find myself enjoying more citrusy IPAs and to a lesser extent, candy; but over piney I just don't care for (although rye can be nice).

    Thoughts?

Any other IPA sub categories maybe?

even those categories probably have more options than we could ever imagine trying. I think i have similar taste to you. Jai Alai being of of my favorites.

    Jesus Christ, where to begin.

How about because there is more to beer than IPAs, and we don't need a million sub-categories of beer.

By this logic you could split every style of beer into sub-categories, for example "coffee stouts", "chocolate stouts", "BA stouts", etc. Would be way too confusing and subjective.

Using West or East coast to describe IPA's should clear everything up.

Well if we're breaking down the IPA category I would say that there are a few definitive IPA (sub)categories, which are (help me out here): West Coast IPAs, Black IPAs, English IPAs, White IPAs, Belgian IPAs, and just maybe IPLs (but that's stretching it).

It would be nice to break down IPAs by their hop profile but it would be unnecessary, I rely on reviews for that info.

I mean...I guess that would work, but what about Sculpin, or pliney, or hop notch...those (very popular) west coast IPAs are rather citrusy/sweet...and Nugget Nectar or countless other new England IPAs are malty/piney...

traditionally - west coast are a bit more "pungent" I agree...but I think with the influx of IPAs... its almost moot at this point. Although we all know what someone means when they say "west coast" style (working half a day, surfing, and eating tacos of course)

Nugget Nectar is not an IPA. GET READY TO HEAR THIS A LOT FOR THE REST OF THIS THREAD.

No need for sub categories, the hop differences and blends are the reason IPA's go all over the place. Too confusing to be useful, and palates differ. I've seen guys mention Citrus bombs as piney, and vice versa.

in general I agree. but since you bring it up, I have to admit I've always kind of felt that barrel aged stouts do deserve their own category. to me a BA stout is so fundamentally different than a non-BA stout, benefiting from a significant additional process, that it's almost a disservice (particularly to the non-BA variety) to throw them all in the same category.

Black IPAs/American Black Ales/Hopped Stouts/etc. should be called Cascadian Dark Ales. It sounds the best, and it doesn't contradict itself (Black/Pale). Just because something's hoppy doesn't mean it has to be India something.
But that's just me, because I love the sound of Cascadian Dark Ale as a name.
