Thought you all might enjoy this. Suzanne and I went to Barclay's pub in Oakland. They had a IPA tasting the night before that we could not make so we went the next day and held our own. There were eight IPA's we tried. I'll list them in order of preference. The results:
    1. Drakes IPA
    2. Firestone Union Jack
    3. Russuin River Blind Pig
    4. Port Brewing Wipeout
    5. Bear Republic Racer 5
    6. Big Sky IPA
    7. El Toro IPA
    8. 21st Amendment Brew Free or Die IPA.
I will say that El Toro and 21st were a big surprise. I remember them both being much better, especially El Toro which I wish I could find more often. I'm convinced both kegs were way off. 21st didn't even taste like an IPA, it just tasted empty.

I live about 1/2 mile from the El Toro Brewery, and I wouldn't get too excited over their stuff. It's good, but I've had much, much better.

I agree and disagree, I think their IPA is pretty solid and like I said this keg at Barclay's seemed off. I do not like El Toro's Oatmeal Stout and Poppy Jasper is acceptable though there are ambers I like much more. Their pub and restaurant is nice. They made a California Common a few years back that i thought was pretty tasty.

Oh it was something else. I didn't know what to expect; tasted extremely complex, but kept coming back for another sip. It was addicting. Definitely will buy it again next year. I was just at Firestone the other day and guys were coming in at 10am buying Growlers of it. Get it while it's hot folks!

Their Stout was the first I had ever had of the style and loved it when I had first had it. But that was a while back, haha.

Yeah it was about 50 dollars for the growler I believe. I just remember people coming in, filling one, two, maybe even three, and trying to listen in on the total cost.

El Toro makes some pretty decent barleywines and the dry-hopped versions of Poppy Jasper are tasty. Last time I went they had a new India Pale Lager that was downright delicious. Try the Ghost Chili Pale Ale if they still have any around! Also, sounds like the 21st was definitely a bad/old keg, because that stuff is pretty citrusy fresh, not a top tier IPA like Drake's or Union Jack but solid nonetheless.

I'm surprised Pepsi and Geico did not win or place.

I once tried doing a blind IPA tasting and it was a huge fail because all of them varied in freshness and were correspondingly good/bad.

Your results seem to follow what I would expect, however. Union Jack, when you can find it really fresh, is surprisingly good.
