Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Finest Kind should be way up there, IMO.

I mean I know a blind taste test is the great equalizer, but the method here (tournament bracket style) seems very strange for a tasting. Couple that with the palate fatigue of doing an IPA tasting and I dunno. But as long as they had fun doing it...

Like I said, Finest Kind ended up being paired against Flower Power in the first round, and given that Flower Power was a favorite of the majority of tasters it kind of got screwed. I realize tournament style isn't going to give you a good 2nd, 3rd, 4th type ranking. All your going to get out of it is what your favorite beer is out of the group. But this was just for fun, and it was a lot of fun!

For palate cleansing in between we had water and crackers. I also put out a little sheet reminding people to drink water before and after each beer. As far as palate fatigue, I was a little concerned that at the end everything was just going to taste the same after hearing people mention that here before, but for me and everybody else I talked to that never happened. Each beer started with a 2 oz pour, and not a lot of refills were needed to make it through the whole tasting (maybe one refill on one beer per person.) Most of the beers were different enough that you didn't need much to decide what you preferred.

And all were good. Even though I may have picked one beer over another, I'd still buy any beer on that list.

Although taste tests are largely subjective to each individual, I have had every beer on the OP's list except #10 and I have not problem with the rankings. I like them all.

With 14 different judges, everyone's 1st round pairings should have been different, which would have helped prevent that. I realize that is harder to arrange, however. But not much.

Edit: I may have had to pull out my old Experimental Design textbook to get some ideas on how to balance the tourneys across everyone. But with a dedicated bartender and bit of planning, it could have been balanced.

Also age of the beer which probably has the biggest effect on IPA rankings.

When Flower Power is fresh it's one of the best, if not the best, single IPA's in the county. Especially on draft. I had a growler filled at Ithaca that was just kegged the night before and it blew me away by how dank and mango-y it was.
