Steel's "IPA" arrived in the mail today. There are three glasses in the picture on the cover, one of which is filled with a very dark beer. Ugh.

    It's a black IPA.

Have you ever had a beer that purported to be a black IPA that you liked? And did you think it did not quite fit into a BJCP style (disregarding color)? As for black IPAs, I've only ever had New Glarus Blacktop. And I think it is more than an IPA with only added color, but something other than a robust porter. I've only had it a small number of times, and it's my only experience in this territory. I think I noticed it on the local shelves again, so I ought to give it another try. However, my earlier tastings make me think there may be room on this planet for a beer that owes some of its heritage to an American interpretation of IPA, excepting the pale part. I'm open to calling it American brown for colorimetric reasons, but if I close my eyes, Black Top reminds me of no American brown I've ever tasted, either..

Perhaps part of my contrarian attitude stems from envy; I have a weekend in front of me, and my IPA book hasn't arrived yet.

Stone does a couple I've found tasty. They can have a spot in my fridge.

I don't get all bent out of shape about the whole style fiasco.

Well, as the dude behind what many people (including myself) consider to be one of the best Black IPAs around, I'd say that's his prerogative. No?

Had Unitas Black IPA. It was gross.

I think was scarred for life from it.

Firestone Walker's Wookey Jack is quite tasty. You could almost close your eyes and think you were drinking an IPA.

If that's the case, then I say, what's the point? I know that they make good pale ales at Firestone Walker, but I feel like I want something to be more than IPA that is black. You ought to be able to close your eyes and taste something that, while inspired by IPA, is somehow different. My opinion.

I generally agree with you. It's somewhat of a 'fad'. That being said I do not like the black IPAs that are heavy on the roasted malt and raisin-like flavors. Yuk. Most are like that.

I do like Deschutes Hop in the Dark. But I would have to agree that a lot of these black IPAs are just obnoxious. A lot of belgian IPAs, too.

It's all a matter of taste, of course, and if people like 'em, I'm not going to argue. But to me, it's a bit like those bbq chicken pizzas or bacon tacos with guacamole. Some people like 'em, but to me, simpler is better, and piling one flavor on top of the other just loses what's interesting about both.

The point is that it's an excellent beer. Really, there doesn't need to be any other point.

Seriously all HOW IS THE BOOK? Hopefully my copy will come today so I'll find out for myself.

Also I'll jump on the other side and say I have always dug "Black IPA's"

I really might have to pick up this book & the Oxford beer companion while I'm at it (no I don't care about all the "inaccuracies"). And I'll say that Wookey Jack & Uinta Dubhe are awesome, whatever style you care to call them.
