I'm in the same boat as you, OP. I am still not an IPA lover, but the ones I've loved the most are the ones that taste like hops but don't seem bitter to my palate. As far as I'm concerned, Stone Enjoy By is the best, followed by Lagunitas Sucks and Heady (never had Pliny). Even Hopslam tasted pretty much like the other renowned IPAs, like Sculpin and AleSmith, etc. Try Stone Enjoy By 2.14.14. Tomorrow is the last day!

Two Hearted will do the trick. Goodluck!

Seriously try to find Lagunitas Sucks right now while you still can. It's an IPA that tastes like one but doesn't leave the harsh, bitter finish. Also Sam Adams Rebel IPA is easy drinking, maybe get one on draft at a bar and see what you think.

Good advice. Those are both pretty mellow IPAs that are available in MO.

I didn't used to like IPAs. I started drinking a few like Longhammer but the one that really got me hooked was Maximus. Now IPAs are mostly all that I buy, especially Odell IPA and FW Union Jack.

Start with DIPAs and work your way back. DFH 90 minute and Southern Tier Unearthly got me started on hops and I haven't looked back since.

perhaps you just don't like IPAs? maybe take that as a hint from your body and get over it? i don't find asian women attractive but i don't go around asking people to help me get into asian women.

My first real bitter beer was arrogant bastard, hence the name. I didn't like it's taste, but I loved the buzz I got compared to budweiser. After that it was porters and chimay, and eventually had stone IPA. I thought this beer was sooo bitter but I pushed through it, that was 6 years ago and now after just exploring any and every IPA I could find I just got used to it and now I love it. Your taste buds will most likely get accustomed to it, but it starts out harsh just like you said. Who knows though, maybe yours won't change, but it did for me, over the course of a few years.

Maybe that worked for you but that doesnt make sense to me. Makes more sense to start with less hoppy and less bitter IPAs and work your way up.

I first got into hoppy beers through Rogue (hence the profile photo) but I love bitter foods so it wasn't exactly a stretch. A lot of my friends who are not IPA fans love 90-minute, due to the balance.

Definetly go for a "White IPA" ... Deschutes Chainbreaker, Boulevard Reboot are great choices. Also! Try Green Flash Le Freak! It is a Belgian Tripel/IIPA style that really mixes well and mellows the hops!

I started small with Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, and adjusted to it in a small amount of time. Drank it regularly until I one night thought how cool it would be to buy a craft beer so kicks. Bought a Hoptologist based on it's score. Holy Cow, where has this been all my life???
No turning back after that, it made me appreciate a great IPA (double) and opened my palate to a much better world.
Sculpin would be a great try for you, as someone mentioned!

LOL! Exactly! This will work too, it's like scotch or cognac. It can be an easily acquired taste! Just get your tolerance for hops up bro! Do you even HOP BRO?

He could have been just going off of Ratings and not realized that these were Doubles! People do the same thing with wine, a person who has never had much wine will look at a good Cab rating and buy it, 30 minutes later they are wondering if it is even made from grapes! XD

I wouldn't touch an IPA for years - despised them. Loved stouts and barleywines. I found the big malt backbone eased the transition to American IPAs. Developed a taste for the various hop styles while still getting the malty sweetness. Once I developed that taste, I started revisiting IPAs. Now I consistently keep a log of IPA on-draft year-round.

If you can get it, check out Deschutes Red Chair NWPA. Instead of being an IPA-lite, like many so-called pale ales, this has its own thing going: a rich malt character hits first, with the hop rising up through the aftertaste. It just began distribution in my area, and already it seems like a great beer with which to line my fridge.

I totally get that your average BMC drinker isn't ready to plunge into DIPAs and the like right off the bat, but I'd love to offer those people this beer, it just seems like a great introduction to higher-quality suds.

    Greels and Redneckwine like this.

I agree with everyone that said pale ales. Mirror Pond is quite good. I also really like Dale's Pale Ale by Oskar Blues. You might try Accumulation by New Belgium if you can find it. It's a white IPA that's very drinkable,

I jumped into the deep end of IPAs back before I knew much about beer, I ordered one brewed in house and called it an "eepah". It took me about half the pint to get into it, but ever since, I've really enjoyed the style.

As a couple others have said, Lagunitas Lil Sumpin. I have some friends who love IPAs, and some that hate them. ALL of them love Lil Sumpin though

I've been drinking IPAs or at least beers labelled IPA for over half a century. I wish I really knew what the term actually means, it has been used for such a wide range of beers and the genie can't go back into the bottle. Even in their heyday there was no real distinction made between Pale Ales and IPAs.

Samuel Adam's Double Agent IPL and Latitude IPA are extremely easy drinking hoppy beers.
