I have a buddy driving out to California for vacation in mid March. Was wondering if there is anything in the San Antonio stores (west side-Lackland AFB area) that I cannot get here in the LA/OC area? He is not that knowledable in the craft world. I see you can get Founders in TX. Is Breakfast Stout still available? I've never had their ipa's. Any good? I like my Bell's Hop Slam(which I'm already getting from AZ), ODells ipa's(also AZ hook up), Heady Topper(I know TX does not get), Zombie Dust, etc. Or any good TX ipa's you guys can recommend? Thanks TX's BA's.

Should be no problem finding Breakfast Stout. I'd recommend Founders Imperial Stout as well. Saint Arnold Endeavor is a good one. Real Ale just released their Brewers Cut Double IPA.

Karbach Weekend Warrior is great, though its a pale ale. If you can get him to stop in Albuquerque or somewhere along the way in NM and get you Elevated IPA, that's your best bet.

There's nothing really by lackland. There's only store. It's a Twin Liqours on marbach and 410. They have a decent selection but he might not get the best of help from the employees. Maybe he will. I don't ever ask cuz I know what I'm looking at.
Other than that there's a Specs liquor storeof I-10 and dezavala. They'll be very helpful. If he's going to California he's mostly going to go that way since he has to take I-10. Or HEB(grocery store) and bandera and 1604 that has a good selection. These places are all real easy to get to. Right off the highway. Oh and liquor stores here are 10-9 Monday-Friday and closed Sundays.

If he's driving this far, he may as well visit the better shops in town. Visit 1604 at Blanco for the Gabriel's Superstore. Freetail Brewery is not far and is a definite must-visit.

True. But his buddy and I don't know how much he'd want his to ask his friend to do for him. Good suggestions though.

It's worth mentioning that Breakfast Stout is done for the season and disappearing all over.... At least in Austin. However their porter is great and available. Their All Day IPA is about as sessionable as an IPA gets, centennial is good as well.

I've seen loads of breakfast stout at world market in Austin and corpus. I would check there first.

From what I have learned....make it as easy as possible for him. Call up a beer store in town, talk to the beer guy and explain your situation. Ask him to put a case together for you - give him a price range you want to work with and what you are generally working with. See if you can pay for it over the phone and have your friend pick it up. Tell your friend to swing by the store and ask for your box.

This takes out all the guess work, and the leg work, for your friend. You will likely get better things as well.

Also, we will have Odells by then. We do not get Bell's but it should be here about a month after he is in town (as always).

I have done this with my parents who travel across the country a lot...and I have never had an issue and always end up with great stuff.

TX has some great stuff as well - look into some of the local stuff that you wont see outside of TX.

For Texas beers I'd definitely get one of Fireman 4, Buried Hatchet Stout, Deep Ellum IPA, Naked Nun, Toss in a Founders Breakfast Stout(only if you like coffee beers) and Dirty Bastard(if you can find one)

Out of Dallas the Community Mosaic IPA is being bottled now. It's wonderful but not sure it distributes to San Antonio. From Austin get the Stash IPA from Independence Brewing, i'm sure it's down there. Also the 512 IPA from Austin, and Real Ale Lost Gold IPA, out of Blanco, which is fantastic.
If you decide to venture away from IPAs the list of brews will grow, but I recommend he bring you the Live Oak Hefe, maybe the best representation of that style ever.
    Cheers!

Try at Northwest Food Mart, further down from Alon HEB. Have lots of off shelf beers in stock.
