Julius is better than any DIPA. But that's none of my business.

I love both, but I'm picky. A great IPA is a thing of beauty, a killer fresh Headhunter is amazing, a so so IPA that's 6 weeks old not so much. But I do find that I have a much easier time finding a Dipa that I really enjoy over most common ipas, seems everyone throws one out there and most are dull average. I'd rather drink an AAL than a mediocre IPA.

Our paths sound pretty similar. I grew into liking IPAs and discovering there are quite a few I like, but give me a DIPA anytime. Just finished a Founder's Double Trouble, by coincidence. The "me " of a few years ago would be completely surprised to find that this year I'm eagerly awaiting Short's Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster release, one of my favorite DIPAs these days.

My wife, who absolutely HATES IPAs will drink the occasional DIPA (she loved Sucks, for example).

To be clear I didn't say I was "meh" on Pale Ales and I come across many I enjoy, it is IPAs I generally tend to be "meh" on. I see this beer often in my area now but pass by it due to the price and the fact that I find Sculpin to be terribly overrated so I assume I will find this one to be too...probably not fair and I will give it a shot one of these days.

That's the funny thing, though, as outside of these DIPAs I am enjoying, I like pretty "regular" beers in terms flavor and ABV and some styles I drink regularly: Lagers (Helles is a favorite of mine), Pilsners, Pale Ales... IPAs typically tend to wreck my palate faster than DIPAs do, go figure!

Exactly! I can finish pretty much any mediocre beer but hand me a mediocre IPA and it's damn near undrinkable to me. But with DIPAs, I've had a few of what would probably be considered to be average and there were no issues at all and most times, quite enjoyable.

Funny that with IPAs there seems to be a perfect sweet spot for me (pun intended?) and if it is not within that spectrum, I find that I don't really enjoy it much at all.

I'll usually grab an IPA over a Pale Ale and both over a DIPA. Balanced and drinkable DIPAs just seem few and far between.

I can name 5 Dipas maybe more that I love to every IPA that IMO is worth of drinking. For ipas I'd really have to think hard beyond Furious/ Headhunter/ Scythe/ White Rahja that I'd consider trade worthy.

It is sounding like we have similar tastes (although admittedly I haven't tried any of the IPAs you mentioned, will have to look into those). I haven't been blown away by an IPA yet and some of the highly regarded ones I don't really care for...Torpedo, Hop Devil, Sculpin just to name a few...I would never go so far as to say they are undrinkable to me and I can finish them no problem but I have one and I don't have a desire to have another for quite a while.

I am the other way around, I usually prefer IPA over its larger cousin Imperial double etc...

Although I do find that many of the DIPAs on the lower end of the spectrum I really enjoy when they are done well.

I prefer imperials as well, but there are plenty of single IPA's and APA's that can hold their own with the big IPA's.

A lot of IPAs are pushing the boundaries these days. For instance Community Mosaic is marketed as an IPA but is really a DIPA in many people's eyes.

Check those abv percentages before coming to an conclusions is my point, or you'll find yourself coming back around again.

I prefer the DIPAs over IPAs big time as well. There seems to be more of a balance of hops and malt so there is less of a bitter aftertaste. I enjoy the sweetness of the malts. Two of my favorites are Scream IIPA and RuinTen. Plus the extra abv gets me a nice buzz too!

Headhunter is available in Western Pa, I can order Furious on line but Pa is a non ship to state. i can understand the frustration given the IPAs you have access to. If your in eastern pa look to beers from NJ, some really great stuff comes out of central nj.

i usually have a good variety of SIPA's and DIPA's.

I think 6-7% ABV is the sweet spot for ipas. Flower Power, Ruination, Sculpin, Hop Knife.

Although Enjoy By, Chillwave, Heady, 077XX are all amazing.

Yeah I'm about done with DIPAs and IIIPAs. I enjoy drinking them once in while but the sweetness and the high abv turns me off. I like to drink more than three beers in a sitting...

For me, Double/Imperial IPAs were gateway hoppy beers for everything else.

I love a good DIPA. I'm drinking a DirtWolf right now. That said, I prefer APA's over DIPA's most of the time. Then again I really like English bitters. We all go through phases as out palates change or just get bored. With no real planning or forethought I've been seeking out the lighter styles this summer. I've tried a bunch of new pilsners, kolsch, gose, berliner weisse, etc.
