I used to like extremely malty styles like bocks and doppelbocks because of the sweetness, but over time came to realize that the hop/malt balance is key for me and I don't enjoy those styles as much anymore. I still prefer things on the sweeter side, so I agree with the OP, DIPAs > IPAs with APAs somewhere in between. Some IPAs smell and taste really great at first, but then bitter hop finish just kills it for me (Deschutes Fresh Squeezed, BP Sculpin, Grapefruit sculpin). I'm discovering though, that some IPAs have a much more muted bitterness (Hangar 24 Betty IPA!) which I like. I suspect that as I try more beers and gain the ability to detect more nuances between them, that DIPAs will become too heavy/boozy for me and I'll start leaning more toward IPAs, but only time will tell.

I've found your exception! (it's an IPA don't let the label fool you)

Pretty sure you like doublemint gum as well. It happens.

Another good one! I probably don't get that one enough, but I really do enjoy that rich malty fruitiness in stouts like that.

DIPAs are like a North American P-51A Mustang.
Imperial IPAs are like North American P51-D Mustangs.

I'm doing a search, but I know that there's a thread from somewhere back around 1996 that's titled:
    APAs, meh...but IPAs, yeah! :grinning:

@ESHBG , I am with ya, I prefer DIPAs over IPAs. Even APAs over IPAs. I enjoy the sweet maltiness that comes with the bigger beers, and if you can throw some fruity/tropical flavored hops in there too.... mmmmm. If you haven't tried any of Great Lakes offerings in the DIPA area, I would recommend them. Chillwave and Lake Erie Monster are both extremely delicious IMO.

Y'all really need to give La Cumbre's Malpais Stout a spin if you haven't already. Definitely in the FES vein and delicious. I don't want to threadjack here, so won't go on about it, but look it up.

    This.

I was having one a while back and realized I don't really like them. As I posted in another thread, it's like DIPAs are made from a concentrate and they didn't put enough water in them. Too sweet, too malty, too thick, too boozy, too much of everything.

I love double IPAs and would drink them as much as single IPAs were it not a concern of health, weight and ability to parent without slurring or sleeping on counters

I started the whole hoppy beer thing by experimenting with imperials first, then later the AIPAs. Like most, I found the sweetness and balance of an IIPA/DIPA to be quite refreshing. The intense bitterness (for me, at the time) in AIPAs was just a turn off. But I warmed up to AIPAs after trying both Bell's 2HA and Fat Heads Headhunter and now a few years later, I almost always reach for the single instead of the double.

Every time I see the latest Enjoy By on tap, I order it (probably to do with some subliminal brain washing from spending time on here). And every time I think why the f**k did I do this

For me, the perfect IPA is in the 7% to 8% range. That doesn't mean I won't enjoy others, but I just find everything falls into place much better for me at that range. I find it's rare to find a really good at 10%+- they just become too sweet, syrupy, boozy, and intense. Notable exceptions have included All Green Everything (fantastic beer), Double Crooked Tree, Simtra, Triple Sunshine and Hoptimum.

All depends on hop profile and IBU's..I've had DIPA/TIPA that were a big disappointment and IPA's that are phenonenal and vice versa.

Never really was a fan of IPAs to start on my beer journey, but DIPAs were my jam in the summer. Ironically now I am starting to trend away from the DIPAs and enjoying more and more IPAs. I think with anything boozy, most people will gravitate to the sweeter version of something at first and then after enough time learn a better appreciation for the drier examples. Nothing wrong with preferences so long as you enjoy them.

I enjoy this beer but it's not an IPA to me, it's a little too malty and I think an Imperial Amber is the perfect description for my taste buds...it's an Amber Ale with a little more hoppiness.

I'm not really an Enjoy By fan either, though.
