It's out now. Bottles are blue with date stamped into the wax. Anybody had it yet? I'm too close to the source and all the taps are still pouring '11, which is a good thing. Fixing to have a vertical '09-'12 at my house soon. Should be interesting.
-To clarify, I meant the labels are blue this year, not the bottle. I realize that sounded weird. -Yeah, I dig seven devils. The second glass is better than the first because having some on your palate seems to fill in the initial gaps of the first one, especially on the finish. Wish it had a tad more carbonation. I'd like to see what nitro-pushing it would do.
I found seven devils to be amazing once it warms up to room temp...when its fridge cold its like a flat bourbon and coke....all sorts of flavors come out once it warms up..
I haven't tried Irish Walker There are plenty of '11 bottles on the shelves still..almost brought one home a few times.. Just had Seven Devils for the first time yesterday...awesome beer IMO and definitely an awesome price. Grabbed two bottles and a couple OH glasses for about around the same price as a bottle of some bba beers. I think it makes up for Eiraphiotes
Not to get away from the initial point of this post, but yes -- Seven Devils is an excellent beer. It may be the best beer I've had this year, actually.
I had my first seven devils with wolfeman007. Thanks! I was pleasantly surprised. Although I'm not really a fan of scotch ales, the barrel really shone through. So pleased, that I had to open another bottle the next night. Back to the original post, I am a huge fan of Irish walker so I will definitely be picking some up. I really wish it too would see a barrel treatment this year. Perhaps with used lindley or event horizon barrels?
-Keep your eyes peeled and your ears perked... you won't get exactly what you want, and it might not be this year, I can't remember, but there are good things on the way. -500 is a good number to remember.
I wouldn't go that far ... Lagunitas Sucks holds that spot for me, but Seven Devils is a great beer nonetheless. Lucked into one bottle, would love to find more. Irish Walker '11 wasn't my favorite, but I'll likely try the '12. Maybe that one is a beer I'd prefer fresh.
I think Irish Walker is a very underrated brew; I loved the '11. My girlfriend and I shared a bottle after splitting some barrel aged Old Rasputin recently. The Irish Walker more than held its own in that comparison. I haven't tried the '12 yet, some jerk just snagged me four bottles of it. I may pay him for it... at some point.
-I've had some on draft. If you like imperial browns, you'll probably like it. Not a big brown fan. Anyways, I could be totally wrong, but I don't remember it being barrel aged.
I haven't had the base beer, which I assume is what you had, since the first batch is in the barrels now. So far I've really liked OHs bba offerings though, so I will definitely give this one a try.
-Ok, I had to ask just to make sure it was ok to spill the beans. OHB will be dropping a special barrel aged barleywine in celebration of their 500th batch. I think it will be late this year or early next year. -Following that there will be a barrel aged barleywine that will be celebrating their 20th anniversary. This one will be super special and (I'm pretty sure) it will be a blend of '09-'12 Irish walker along with "500", and some Bardstown Brand that has been in a barrel since 2007!!!!! This may also be OHB's first beer with a release party. -And if that wasn't enough, each year Irish Walker has had a few kegs set aside and at some time in the future, (annually?) you will see a regular Irish Walker and then a 3+ year blended version out as well. Whether this will be bottled or on draft, I do not know. (I'll come back and clarify more details if I get more/better/correct info, ie barrel types, blends, anything else) -I normally don't like browns, they are just... meh, but I had another one of these on tap recently, and I really dug it. Nice and sweet with a good malt complexity that comes with the imperial-izing of the style. And you are right, it is just extra brew that they didn't barrel age.
I keep hearing about this shit that's been sitting in a barrel for the past 5 years... I want. So, 20 year anny huh? How old is Old Hick now?
-Me too but Steven says it won't be released alone, it will only be used as a blend. There just isn't much of it. I think it's just one barrel and it's only about half full at this point due to evaporation. There are also a few kegs of Bardstown (from 2007) that will used for blending. -Their website says 1994, so 18. But I don't know if that's when they took over from the original owners, it could be a year older. Then again, I'm not 100% sure that the original name was Olde Hickory Brewing so that might not matter.
