I feel like this topic is kind of beaten to death and sort of tedious but hey, seems like our cup of tea!

Personally, of course the beer scene is less "exciting" than it was when ever new brewery opening meant genuinely better access to better beer for lots of people. Of course it was more interesting when breweries were the vanguard of access to traditional styles as well as posing the boundaries of what beer could be. But does the fact that the beer market and culture in the US has reached a level of maturity and saturation actually make it less interesting or is it jar the natural arc of novelty?

In some ways I see it as you can pretty much find any style of beer available nowadays locally. The overall distribution is better than ever. However, the best ones and the favorites in my opinion are still few and far between, which still makes the chase for better beer still fun.

    It's both

    The beer scene is ASS.

Every POS major brewery is more or less owned by a conglomerate POS(banks, investors, your mom), everyone says "make lambic rare again" when its the shittiest liquid ever(fruits WTF...drink a smoothie you NECKBEARD), everyone is in Side Project LC and still complaining cuz they did a public sale for a trash ass syrupy beer but their limit was one, IPAs are dead bro , all stouts are adjuncted with diabetes, everyone has health problems and doesn't even workout, trading is only for like 5 breweries only with the same weirdos putting out ISO and FT(lmao at the guy tryina trade a 3 month old BA ipa for a NON ipa WTF)...... i can go on and on

    Fuck beer and the scene.

    I love you guys.

You're an uncivilized monster lambic is NOT a smoothie, and if you can't appreciate the subtle flavors of dusty barn and post cheese plate bile burps then maybe you should stick to bud Light strawberita and pink lemonade seltzer!

But seriously, who the fuck thinks lambic is too common?! Please, send me the Damm extras. Fucking Lime ventures has not come through on the regular Cantillon deliveries to the states!

You gotta go to Canada or Mexico and get the insulin adjunctatered ones for cheap and with no prescription. Also, the word "adjuncted" makes me hate the beer scene more than any exploding can of 3.5% Jamba juice or hyped up candy bar stout ever could

I admit I didn’t get very far into the blog/article. It started talking about it being harder to find something “new” in beer, and I’m sorry, but I don’t equate “new” with “interesting.” Give me a solid, well made beer of any style over something new or interesting any day. Now get the FUCK off my lawn

As the author appears to maintain, to some extent it's a matter of perspective.

I've been drinking craft beer for nearly 50 years now, assuming Anchor steam back in the 70's qualifies. That being said, a seminal moment for me took place in 1987, when I took the California bar examination at the Oakland convention center. As luck would have it, just a couple blocks down the street was the Pacific Brewing company. They brewed their own beer, but they also had on tap 20 or 30 guest beers from Germany, England and various local microbreweries. I'd never seen anything like it and was completely entranced.

When I subsequently moved to Sacramento in 1989 it seemed like the craft beer industry was really taking off. A buddy of mine at work would go with me once a week on a microbrewery exploration adventure. We'd typically hit two an evening, mostly in the Bay area, but also in the gold country, Chico (for obvious reasons), the wine country, etc. I went to my first GABF in 1991, and a few years later up to pdx and Seattle. It was a very exciting time and there's nothing now quite like the experience I had back then.

That being said, I prefer the current landscape. There are so many more options and quality is so much better. My frickin local grocery store has a better selection by far than any beer store in existence back in the 80's and 90's, and I feel ill served if I have to drive more than 15 minutes to get to a taphouse that has at least 30 or 40 selections.

Sure, sometimes it's easy to become a bit jaded by the wealth of different options.... if I'm in the mood for a great saison, helles lager, Baltic Porter, IPA or ba stout, instant gratification is a reality. I'm not sure how interesting it is, but I'm completely good with that arrangement. My beer world is plenty interesting enough for my meager hopes and expectations. :smirk::yum:

For me I love a good IPA. But I find myself buying less craft beer than I use to because of prices. You buy two four packs of pints sometimes it comes out close to $40 bucks when I can get 2 for $2.20 BUD ICEs at the Casey’s around the corner of my house. It’s still good and the beer is good but spending so much money on beer to catch a buzz hits the wallet. I’ll get a pack a week I want to try then after that ICE beers or mass produced BUD,Miller,Coors. It’s not less interesting to me. It’s just so damn expensive.

It's definitely you, and I'd say the same for me. Imagine if we both discovered craft beer today. The stories we could tell in 10-20 years. Nothing would ever compare to "our" era. Cheers.

Reported! Jk. I forgot that I'm the great white north you probably have to get in a 6 month queue (fucking commonwealth) to get your free insulin stout. In the glorious freedom land to the south your insulin stout is available for purchase at any pharmacy. No question who's system is superior.

Can you really not get craft beer for cheaper than that? I feel like beer is expensive in my area but all the beer I buy regularly is in the $10-13/6 pack range. Sure, bmc is cheaper, but I don't enjoy those beers at all so the price difference is easy too understand

Depends on the brewery and the beer. Some 4 packs are $20 some are $11. But still the fact remains. I can get a 12 pack of Revolution Anti-Hero for $22 or 3 BUD ICE 25oz cans for under $5. I get the quality of the beer is better but still a $5 buzz is a $5 buzz.

Well yeah, if you're going for buzz per dollar (with taste as a consideration) it's always gonna be some cheap liquor made into a cocktail. And if you want a beer buzz and you like bud or another cheap beer then hell yeah! Fuck paying for craft beer

To me, it's as interesting as it ever was. The journey itself is the destination. The joy lies in the discoveries you make along the way.

Okay, enough with the waxing philosophical. I'm going to have a lambic now.

I view our current era of craft beer as being the pinnacle.

Unfortunately, it’s only a matter of time before the economy goes tits up (it’s already pretty fucking shaky) and the number of breweries plummet, or even worse, the beer consuming population starts to die off. When the last Boomers and Gen Xers leave the workforce, the craft beer industry is going to have to almost completely rely upon Millennials to produce craft beer. Gen Zer’s seem to generally lack interest in alcohol and seem especially unenthusiastic about craft beer. Generation Alpha will probably be too young to even legally drink!

I live in an area with good distribution and a small number of consistent local breweries pumping out great beers. I have nearly endless options of new beers weekly from around the west coast. That’s all I need.

I miss all the British and Belgian style beers from 12-15yo. How often do you see a Scotch ale or a barleywine that isn't Bigfoot anymore? Much less dubbels. I will say that the average quality of what you see on shelves tends to be better.

I feel like I still see (and buy) a fair amount of barleywines, particularly English (style). Belgians may have thinned but the staples (Duvel, Westmalle, Orval, Dupont, Chimay etc.) are still everywhere.

OP asked if we were at some stage in the natural arc of things and your answer is spot on, the jaded stage, Our true enjoyment and appreciation of this wealth of riches has become a jaded sort of agony brought about by our taking such easy access to greatness and variety completely for granted combined with a crazy longing for what we already have.
