I'm new to beer trading, having just 4 trades here. But I don't see anyone ask for or offer Brooklyn Black Ops stout. Is it a beer that's just not desirable in trading circles. I found it extremely hard to get a hold of, so thought it might have been something that was requested quite a bit given it's limited and unadvertised release, but I don't see a single thread looking to either get it or trade it

It isn't super hard to get a hold of, it is pricey, and it isn't all that great. So that leads to little action in the trading world IMO.

I put it as one of my many FTs in a recent thread and I've gotten a couple trade requests for it specifically. Like others said its just expensive, but in the right market its not limited. In Nashville, we had a 1 bottle limit at most stores. I told the traders asking about it that I would let it go at the $23 I paid for it, simple as that.

Oh, and in my opinion, its a decent beer. Much better than most other BAs think...

i got some decent offers for BO. You need to find the right person. it may take a while to get the trade done, but it will happen.

I agree, I like it fresh but the high carbonation due to the champagne yeast is strange. With 1+ years on it, it's very tasty. I was surprised how much of the bourbon it retained and the body was much smoother.

I've got two bottles in my cellar. I figured I'd sit on them for maybe a year or so and hope I can trade one for another decent stout. But you're right. It doesn't seem to be in too high demand.

It's desirable to people who have never had it before. To most everyone else, no. It's not well loved, it's very expensive, and it's not super hard to get when it comes out if you really want it.

Maybe it's because the label says the beer doesn't really exist.

A "92" overall isn't well loved? :astonished: I'd say that has a pretty good score, certainly not among the rest of the highly sought after bourbon barrel aged Imperial Stouts, but that's not a bad score at all.

when it first came out years ago and everyone wasn't making barrel aged stouts, it was pretty in demand...now (as others have suggested) the price tag puts many off. i am definitely surprised at how challenging it can be to get at some local spots...when it sits on shelves in others. a mightily tasty beer in my opinion, but at $20+ a bottle, i now buy my one bottle and drink it fresh.

Pretty sure he was referring to the trading community, not its BA rating necessarily. I think it's really the fact it's quite expensive, mostly.

Compared to other BA stouts, I would say a 92 is average if not mediocre.

Well that's like, you're opinion, man. Comparisons aside, 92 overall on any beer is pretty damn good score!

92 is definitely a good score overall, but when you are talking about a style (combining RIS and american impy stout) where just over 37% of beers have a higher score I would say that is a beer I could easily do better than. And that's not even counting how barrel aging skews scores upward. If I could factor that in, the proportion of higher scoring beers would be greater.

Well, a 90 is basically a C when it comes to a bourbon barrel aged imperial stout on this site. So yeah, I wouldn't call a 92 anything to write home about for the style. Also, I don't feel like harvesting the data, but this used to be a much more widely loved beer when barrel aged stouts were not as common. Pretty sure it was in the Top 100 for a while - so I'm thinking the score from the last year or two is even lower than a 92.

Regardless, I'm talking less about it being a decent beer and more about how it has an abnormally large share of detractors, and thus people who have had it aren't really going after repeats.

Sounds like we have grade-inflation. Or we live in Lake Wobegone, where "all the women are strong, the men are good-looking, and the BBA Impy Stouts are above average".

I drank an 08 and 09 recently...beer is fantastic with some age on it.. But a parabola at 6 to 9$ cheaper is a no brainier

you'll find someone who'll trade "higher" than year round locals for it, but depending how specific you are, you may need to try the ISO a few times. i've traded black OPS, but i can't remember for what... i also can't remember if the black OPS was an extra or not. basically, i don't have a very good memory.

but yeah, there's people around willing to try it and offer up something like abyss or a little higher. $4$ is a bit touchy, but meh.
