I know malts usually create this flavor profile in beers like stouts and porters but I swear I had a hoppy beer the other day that tasted kind of like coffee. Am I drinking too many stouts (my favorite style) or is this a possibility?

Coffee IPAs exist, i.e. Fort George's Java the Hop, but the examples I know of use actual coffee.

I Think the bitterness of Coco Nibs can be confused for hop bitterness in some stouts I've had.

I vote 'no.' (Unless you've had bad coffee in the past.)

If you taste coffee in a beer it is the malt or it has been added as an adjunct.

You are not alone. Dogfish Head 60 Minute IPA tastes like coffee to me at times.

Some of the Evil Twin stouts try to use hops to approximate dark-coffee bitterness.

with shade-grown coffee, it is possible for the coffee to take on a certain flavor profile. so, while probably difficult, if you grew hops under a coffee tree together i'd wonder what kind of flavors each would take on.

Oak treatment can impart coffee-like flavors. As can malts, obviously. That flavor profile would not be imparted by hops, regardless of the variety though.

Yes, certain coffee also has hop like aromas and flavors.

I don't know of hops that have a coffee flavor, but I did buy 8oz. Of "Chocolate" experimental from Yakima Valley. Need to use those.
