Why not? Unless beer should only taste like one thing (i.e. perhaps American Adjunct Lagers), then it could and should taste like anything the brewer wants it to. Otherwise, you'd also have to say that beer should not taste like coffee, chocolate, pineapple, grapefruit, etc. And that's a world I just don't want to live in

So yeah, in response to the OP: what exactly is "beer taste"? If you ask me, anything made with the four traditional ingredients is beer; whatever else is thrown in is up to the person who makes it.

Would you say a hamburger isn't a hamburger because someone decided to top it with avocado? Hell no. It's still a burger; it's just got a little something extra that some people might not like and/or expect on it.

You're right--every brewer is entitled to put any shit into their beer they want. It's really not my place to tell them what to do. However, I did not such thing. I said a beer should not taste like spiked cucumber soup--which in now way implied a limit on adjuncts. Rocky Mountain Oyster Stout went from joke to gimmick to just a regular item and that doesn't bother most people--nor should it (if you don't like it, you don't drink it). But one of my college profs used to get upset over "blueberry bagels" (or, for that matter, "cinnamon-raisin bagels"), mainly because a bagel should not be a dessert--you can put whatever you want in a "bagel" but don't call it a bagel unless it meets particular conditions, including its culinary purpose. So, in his mind, there is no such thing as a blueberry bagel--it's an oxymoron.

Note that I was not objecting to beer tasting like cucumber--I phrased it quite differently. I disagree with OP--there is no reason to be afraid of adjuncts (see the link just above). But not everything that's brewed with adjuncts is any good or is even necessarily beer. There are limits on the consumer end, even if there shouldn't be any at the brewer end. For what it's worth, there are a few people who like Rogue Voodoo-branded beers, but the average rating remains in the 60s--the territory that's normally reserved for some of the vilest BMC variants. It is still, however, beer. But if you ever had cucumber soup, you'd know that no beer can taste like that.

PS: A hamburger topped with avocado is still a hamburger. But a "hamburger" made from avocado is not. It's a fake hamburger.

So, if I took 1 ounce of beer (made from water, barley, hops, yeast), added 32 ounces of pancake batter, and cooked it on a griddle in the shape of a pancake... can I still say it's beer?

I hope so, 'cause my buds are coming over for a session and I just cooked some up.

    I've had a Hendrick's cucumber Martini....pretty tasty.

Never had a cucumber beer though.

Yeah it's still beer. Those are just added flavors. They are extra ingredients to get those flavors in a beer.

Steep some cucumber slices in cheap potato vodka, then add that to Malta Goya. There--a cucumber beer.
