I was a member of the forums when I first started brewing, and stayed on the forums for a couple years after, but I quit because there was not enough helpful advice and information and too much judgement and insult. Anytime there was a new brewer with a recipe or someone with a new idea it was nitpicked and heckled.

I came back after a 6 year hiatus because I needed some advice, but also because I felt as if I had grown and maybe had some advice to give.

Maybe I am a little on edge expecting the worst. I can admit that. I'll try to be a little thicker skinned, and I hope the forums have changed.

I've been here for 3 years almost and the guys who "bully" each other over the use of crystal malts or the use of a chugger pump over a march are short lived. But we do enjoy some heckling in good natured fashion along the way. Welcome aboard and rdwhahb.

Since I've been brewing, (5 years now), I've found this forum very helpful. I usually get an answer or two within 10 minutes. Very helpful, even on brew day.

Take any new brewing question within the last week and I'll bet you see at least 7 or 8 responses. Some just links, and others with helpful advice.

I don't think thick skin is necessary, just assume that most/all are actively trying to help.

With that said, there are some opinionated people here and most/all are not interested in hearsay. But, there are not too many assholes. In my opinion, the advice that is given here comes from the right place, everyone wants to help everyone else make better beer. And, there are some wicked smart and knowledgeable people here, I am not one of those

It may possibly be the coconut. They fat and oils can do some crazy stuff. I use to do a chocolate stout and used cacao powder it looked funky. Then I went to a brand that had low fats and after that it never looked funky again. Anything with, fats, oil, etc will seperate, coagulate, float, etc.

Like all batches, DONT panic and toss it out. Only if you definitely know your batch took a dump.

It was definitely fat from the coconut, it was pretty evident when I racked over the weekend. I'll follow up in a week or so to report how it turned out. Thanks all

It should all turn out OK. My stouts with cacao powder have looked worse than after a trip to Taco Bell. I too worried until I found out it was fat/oils. Just be sure to do some extra cleaning/sanitizing on these batches when done. Extra hot water if you can.
